Insanity squared.
The inventor's idea and motivation was easy: He wanted to break Oskar and Coren's records, and keep a bit of margin to can keep the record for a while.
He chose 33, not only because of the symbolics of having 3's everywhere, like the 3x3x3, but also because it's a number attainable by a binary mechanism. Nevertheless, the mechanism isn't exactly binary.
The core is actually a 9x9x9, and there are three layers between each 9x9x9 layer. It could have been binary, but he wanted to avoid excess friction whilst keeping the core quite stable. In retrospect, with the relatively new mechanism he used for the KING of the TETRAHEDRA (see the separate entry).
It took the inventor 205 hours to build it.
