This puzzle is in the shape of a truncated triakis octahedron (like the Dayan Gem VI). It has the same turning axes as a 3x3x3 cube, but allows 45 degree turns on each axis instead of just 90 degree turns. The mechanism is fudged and the inventor made the small face centers circular similar to what was done on the celestial 6.
The closest earlier puzzle is the Gem-45. Relative to that puzzle, the sunstone is just a little deeper cut to add the small corner pieces.
