The inventor designed this 2x2x2 to have small cubes in seven of the cubies. The eighth cubie is the key cubie. Some small cubes can be turned independently but that is because of a design flaw. With one 90°-turn of the 2x2x2 the two small cubes rotate by 120°: The cube that was under the key cubie and the cube that ends up under the key cubie.
