Presenting my new puzzle... It's just a curvy copter plus, right...?
It turns like one...
It has the unbandaged move as expected...
I've also removed the overhang bandaging to allow for more jumbling. No more annoying illegal forced moves anymore.
But as the name implies, there's a twist to this puzzle. I'll let you guys guess what it is for a bit. All to be revealed in two days

Is it the lack of overhang bandaging? That's what it looks like to me.

That is not the twist.

Looks like a cubic transformation of Oskar's Crazy Comet to me. Looks like it might have been 3D printed on an SLS machine though so I'm not so sure... maybe it has 3d printed extensions.

Isn't any Curvy Copter Plus equivalent to the Crazy Comet? After all, they share rhombic dodecahedral geometry and have essentially the same pieces.
I am genuinely stumped as to what secret this puzzle brings if it isn't a corner twist, but I'm just really happy to see more people use the non-bandaging Curvy Copter cuts!

The Curvy Copter Plus bandages both externally and internally.
The corners overhang, while the triangle pieces do not have rotational symmetry and hence bandage when rotated, not to mention the overhang bandaging they supply. Crazy Comet has no overhand nor mechanical bandaging.
I really like the removal of overhang bandaging. Did you design the triangles to have rotational symmetry?
I really have no clue how else it can turn.

I'm quite sure that they do have 3-way rotational symmetry, mechanistically. They need to be able to exchange places with the corners (which have 3-way symmetry), and thus must be identical to the corners. Yes, they do provide overhang bandaging, however you are able to get them back into their original position but rotated. Try doing a simple A B' A' B on 2 adjacent edges, with each move being a jumbling 70.53 degree turn. You'll see that at the end of it, a triangle (not the same one, mind you) will be back in place but rotated. It is an identical puzzle to the Crazy Comet except for the external shape which cause overhang bandaging.

Alright, I said 2 days but I couldn't wait anymore! The twist is revealed when we rotate to the other side... And a different sticker pattern emerges...
And that's the twist! Three axes around a vertex have been twisted (pun intended!) by 60 degrees, so they lie almost on the faces of the cube.
These axes can rotate as per usual.
And the resulting puzzle can reach some strange states.
And even stranger states where the shape is solved but the cuts are differently placed.
If you look at the circled portion below, you can see four turning axes meeting at a single point.
These points are similar to the points at the center of the curvy copter half of the puzzle. Interestingly it turns out that in order for both of these points to exist simultaneously, the required curved cut is the exact cut needed to remove overhang bandaging. Cool, isn't it?
Finally, a scrambled picture
The puzzle is 60mm to an edge, and turns quite smoothly.
Thanks for reading!

Well that is a twist I did not see coming!
I like it a lot, any chance of a video?

Correct. This is a cubic transformation of a shallower cut Rhomdo.
benpuzzles wrote:That is incredibly original! I wasn't expecting anything like this, even for it to be possible in the first place.
Does the "unbandaging" of the Curvy Copter Plus allow for this kind of geometry without it being too restrictive?
The unbandaging was not necessary, but I chose to do it to make solving harder. Also because I've never had a CC+ before, so i wanted to play with one.

The true cubic rhomdo would look like the Praxicopter III on one side and the Curvy copter III on the other side. Maybe Ben can have a go at that one

Quick side note, why has "Rhomdo" come to mean specifically the Trapezo-rhombic dodecahedron, and not a regular Rhombic dodecahedron? Rhomdo = Rhombic dodecahedron
In my own head and my own notes I tend to call regular Rhombic dodecahedra as "Rhomdos", but that's just me.

Nice, that is indeed an unexpected twist. I was expecting a corner-turn, or face-turn, together with the normal edge-turns. Or perhaps even all three into one hybrid. I wasn't expecting the other side of the puzzle to look different, nor to turn so fluently with the Curvy Copter Plus part. Really cool.
How did you came up with the idea?
Greetz,
Quuador

Yeah this is an incredible idea, I truly honestly believe you just paved the way for an entirely new type of hybrid axis puzzle! So unique!
I wish oh SO badly this could get mass produced!! It's no secret that I absolutely love and adore edge turners!
Really can't wait to see more from you in the future!

Honestly to me it doesn't seem too hard to mass produce, it's only just one shell. But what do I know?

The initial idea was to make a cubic (shallower cut) rhomdo, just for the fun of it, but when I saw the resulting cut pattern I knew I had to make this puzzle a reality.

The Rhomdo is a puzzle made by eric vergo. The first face turning trapezo-rhombic dodecahedron.
Thanks for all the comments guys! Much appreciated.
