Hey forum, this is my latest puzzle, The Deceptiminx. It is a face turning dodecahedron that looks like a megaminx, but acts much differently!

This was originally a puzzle on gelatinbrain, I simply designed and built it.

Video

Mechanically speaking, this is a starminx with the "points" hidden. If you look at the pictures closely, you can see that the face centers are slightly recessed into the puzzle. This was required to do because the hyperbolic cuts cause extremely thin parts, and said parts needed to be made thicker. The increase in thickness had to be "traded off" with the recessed center parts.

As you can tell by the video, the turning on the puzzle is not perfect. I plan to do a revision with some sort of clicking mechanism that will solve the slight lock up problems. At that point I will sell copies of the puzzle.

Stickers were cut by Will Kretschmer. I made the mistake of ordering stickers before I had the final design, and made a size change after I ordered the stickers!

Solved

Midturn

One turn executed

Four turns

A slice move

Edge length is 35mm, unfortunately, I don't have a scale to weigh it (sorry!)

To even come up with this idea is one thing (were you on some kind of halucinogenic medication?), but to actually pull it off is another. Amazing job, well done!

Andreas, it seems that your classification system is robust enough to identify virtually every possible twisty puzzle concept that is ever developed ... so I was wondering:

How many potential twisty puzzles are there in your system, if you restrict the number of layers, etc., to some reasonable limit (otherwise I assume the number is unlimited)?

Have you thought about creating a full automated list of potential twisty puzzles using your classification system (maybe even linked to some automatic naming system), and crossing off what has already been produced to see where the gaps are?

This could be a very interesting database, which could also provide inspiration of new puzzles yet to be created...

PS. Sorry if this is off-topic, I'm just curious.

It's really great! It is the ideal form of dodecahedron puzzle because the movement is dynamic.
I really like it!

Excellent puzzle Eric! I was surprised at first when I heard that you were printing it, bearing in mind that you thought the thin parts would cause some problems, but boy am I glad you did! It looks fantastic. So who's up for making a Deceptiminx + Megaminx + Chopasaurus?

I think I can answer this. A void megaminx doesn't have any parities that result from wrong centers. so there can't be one on this puzzle either. The corners are solved like a megaminx without parities. The edges like those on a pyraminx also without parities. The pyraminx crystal itself doesn't have any either despite being centerless, unless you count 2 wrong orientated edges as parity. The centers can be solved easily for last without braking anything up like those on a Starminx. No parities there, only 3 swaps.

(Btw this is my first post with my new avatar. I had the skewb avatar ever since I joined this forum 6 years ago and never changed it. I felt it was time now.
I made that Pentultimate with a cad programm, but it's just fake, no mechanism. I added arrows as a tribute to gelatinbrain.)

Even after your post in the hint thread, I never thought that anyone would make this puzzle. It's a really fun puzzle on gelatin brain. Great for those of us that don't know how to do the starminx points yet. The centers are much easier than I first thought.

In IRC I jokingly suggested this be called the pointless starminx :P

After seeing the slice turn above and seeing the slice turn of the Master Kilominx posted here. It just occured to me that the next higher order Decptiminx IS the Master Kilominx. I just find it interesting that the next higher order Megaminx and the next higher order Decptiminx produce the same puzzle.

The cuts on the Deceptiminx are deeper than on the Master Kilominx, so I believe that a deeper cut Master Kilominx would be equivalent to a higher order Deceptiminx.

I agree with Luke. If this were a lower-order Master Kilominx, you would be able to bandage the Master Kilominx to get this. You could get a similar look, but it would be unturnable. The center pieces as a whole cannot move together.

The Pyraminx Crystal is the deepest cut Face-Turn Dodecaheadron you can make such that the neighboring face centers aren't included in the face turn.

The Deceptiminx is the next deepest cut that can be made. You introduce the neighboring face centers without introducing any new pieces.

The Master Kilominx is already cut as deep as it can be without introducing any new pieces beyond the face centers which in this puzzle don't exist. I guess they could be added in a fashion similiar to adding the 3x3x3 face centers to a 2x2x2. Note sure what they are called but you can see 2 in this first post of this thread. Maybe this piece needs to be added for it to be considered a higher order Deceptiminx.
