The Star Forge is a 3x3x3 Circle Cube with planetary gears moving at 1/2 the pace of the faces.
The inventor wanted the ring of planetary gears to move by 1/8 of a full turn after each 3x3x3 turn so that the gears would change position between corners and edges. This proved challenging, because to satisfy this condition a set of regular planetary gears would need to have the same number of teeth in the inner and outer gear, which is physically possible. That's why the inventor went with a layered approach as seen in the pictures below with different sizes of gears in the two layers.
Currently all the faces are 0-type, meaning the centre does not turn with the rest of the layer. It would take only a really minor design change to make 1-type faces and thus all of the crazy variants.
The inventor uses the pseudonym "Blaze".
