The Spectrolite Gem was inspired by Dave Pitcher's Whirlpool cube. The inventor reimplemented the axis systems with a pentagonal pentagonal icositetrahedron, a catalan solid. This transforms it into a face turning puzzle.
It can be understood also as a simpler (less deep cut) version of Small boulder from Ryan Binter, without some petals and corners.
Jason Gavril came up with the puzzle's name.
