This puzzle is the direct successor of the Crazy Junior Barrel fro the same inventor. He made it specifically after a suggestion from Bram Cohen. He suggested to have only one turn (except for the top-bottom-slice) and make it to rotate the non-circle pieces in sync with the circle pieces on the other side but not the circle pieces on its own side.
