A hexagonal version of the classic "15" puzzle.

A hexagonal version of the classic "15" puzzle with 10 moveable pieces; each consisting of three offset layers. The perimeter fully retains the pieces with a similar slot-and-tab system.

The hexagonal design requires two adjacent moving holes. To fully move a piece it must first be moved into the center of the two holes before a directional movement can be executed (image 2). Unlike rectilinear "15" puzzles which allow two, three or four moves depending whether the hole is in a corner, along an edge or centralized, hexagonal moving holes puzzles only allow two. Dead ends occur anytime both holes have been moved to the perimeter (such as the solved state, image 1), in these positions the last moved piece must be reversed out to one of the two holes. The movement limitations of this puzzle make it significantly more difficult than rectilinear "15" puzzles.

This puzzle was constructed of 3/4 inch particle board, painted with acrylic and coated with a thick layer of clear epoxy. It makes satisfying "clonking" sounds as the pieces are shuffled around and was constructed in September 2001, thus the patriotic motif.
