This puzzle shares a mechanism with the Cross Cube which can be viewed as a 5x5x5 without edges and corners or as a 3x3x3 with an additional layer on each side.
This puzzle came in two versions. The other version has no holes in the twelve faces. That means the inner 3x3x3 is completely hidden.
