This bandaged 3x3x3 is one of the extreme variants. If one removes all stickers except thos from the faces the puzzle would still have 15704 different signatures (aka configurations of blocks).
If the pieces were stickered like the traditional 3x3x3 each signature would have a mere 10 different permutations.
The inventor used the stickering scheme to focus on restoring the blocks. Solving the permutations was not necessary from his point of we. This is a similar approach as in the later "Most signatures bandaged Cube".

It was made for IPP 13.
