This is a piece shuffle truncated into the namegiving solid.
The hexagonal dipyramid quickly became one of the more popular shapes after its first presentation. After the first presentation virtually all mass produced cubes and many custom cube as well were truncated into this shape.
In this case the creator first exchanged pieces of a Fisher Cube and a Windmill Cube (hence the first part of the puzzle's name: FWF) and then truncated the result into this shape.
