Dioctipoid

Click a thumbnail to see its larger version and description.
A spherical puzzle designed from scratch that behaves like a corner turning hexahedron.

The Dioctipoid was fully engineered by the then partners within Designersaurus Rex Ltd, (Spencer-Purvis, Squires & Catton) in 2012. The DNA of the mechanism can be traced from Torres in 1981, through Ozer in 2004, to the Inventors patent and working prototype with a closed exterior achieved in 2007.
The Dioctipoid is produced and sold in two different colour scheme. The first version has uniformly coloured rhombi. In the second one the rhombi are coloured like the adjacent pieces. The colouring is remarkable since no stickers are used for this puzzle but the pieces itself are coloured plastic.
This puzzle is solved like the face turning octahedron. Although there are some difference due to the different colouring.
The inventor filed the patent in 2007 (image 6 shows a figure from the patent) but production started 2011.
Two years before this puzzle hit the market Tony Fisher presented his Octaball. Please refer to the separate entry. The Octaball is a shape transformed FTO which looks identical to the Dioctipoid.
Inside the sphere the Dioctipoid is a complete different puzzle.
