The corners of a Chinaminx are already hollowed but capped with plastic tiles. Therefore all the builder had to do was to remove the caps, remove small amounts of plastic and then reapply the tiles again.
The resulting shape beares the name Dodecadodecahedron. See wikipedia or Mathworld for more details.
