At first a simple siamese transformation with two cubies fused together. It becomes difficult when the rotation on the top axis cube layer prevents the other axis cube from turning on one face. And when fully scrambled, the puzzle is a nightmare. Sometimes you can force a turn, sometimes the spiky pieces mesh like gears, and sometimes it just locks up.
