This is a shape transformation of a 3x3x3. The puzzles name is the name of this solid which is one of the catalan solids. It has 24 faces of which opposing ones are stickered with identical colours.
As the shape with so many sides is approaching the sphere, a 3x3x3 ball can be stickered in the colour scheme to make the puzzle.
This is a cousin of the Skewb Kite made from a skewb rhombic dodecahedron which is a shape variant of a 3x3x3.
