In 1996+ Tony Fisher had a peroid in which he made several Siamese-variants of existing puzzle, including this 5x5x5.
He used two Professor Cubes which were not widely available from that time. He had to manipulate the puzzles mechanism because the original puzzles work with undulating pieces. This undulation would be prevented if the pieces were just glued together without manipulating the mechanism.
