This puzzle was suggested by Carl Hoff in this topic. It resembles a 5x5x5 but it has been bandaged in such a way that it turns like a 3x3x3 in that there are precisely 3 layers per axis. However, it does not solve like a 3x3x3 because there are extra pieces.
This puzzle was actually designed and printed a long time ago but only now I got to correcting an issue with the caps not fitting properly. I've changed the design but hand modded mine so the caps would fit. This took longer than expected because my dremel was locked up.

Anyway, this is the Deep Uniaxial 3x3x3:

VIDEO

On four faces, it does a shallow turn:

On two faces, it does these deep turns:

Although it appears there would be five turnable layers on this axis, this is not the case. You can only do "wide" turns.

The mechanism is actually a blend of a V-Cube 5 and an EastSheen 5x5x5. The EastSheen properties are needed to block the inner layer turns, the V-Cube part makes it turn better.

VIDEO

It will be for sale, but I just need to work some details out.

Wonderful puzzle Tom and Carl, I love how the techinal meaning of a 3x3x3 can vary so much. I wonder how hard it is to solve... :)

Nice job! Have you scrambled it yet? How hard is it?

Eric and I were trying to figure out a mechanism for this a while ago. I can't remember if Eric succeeded or not, but I sure didn't.

Cool puzzle.

Is it possible to create a whole planet series or does your mechanism only work for this specific case? If you imagine it as a block of 5x5x5 cubies, it's easy to see how to bandage it, but of course that's not how twisty puzzle mechs work.

I honestly don't thin it's that much harder to solve than a 5x5... you just need to use one less algorithm (which would cause scrambling)

In Carl's original thread I show how these puzzles are supersets of the crazy 3x3 planets made by Dayan. This puzzle is Venus + a few more pieces (the corner centers of the 5x5 look alike).

I really like this puzzle that I was always wondering if I can make a hand build version of it and realized that it is impossible.

Not hard to solve at all. Just plain slow. Cage method works nicely on this bandaged puzzle.

Where can one learn the details of this cage method? Sounds interesting...

Tom's design doesn't allow for all 8 planets to be made. I've been thinking about that myself and it may be the next puzzle I attempt. Need some free time...
