Hi all,
Here I happy to share my first 3D print puzzles: Curvy Dino 2x2x2 Cube & Curvy Dino Cube.
More than 2 years ago I got this idea when I seen a handmade puzzle 2x2x2 X cube.
I made a special color for the Chinese new year. Hope you like it!

A J

Very cool! The printing resolution looks really good, and I love the look of the two-colour versions! :D

The closest relative of the Curvy Dino 2x2x2 is the SuperX but this new one has one additional piece type, the corners.

Do you want to sticker the puzzles?

It's amazing that something so simple and beautiful as the Curvy Dino 2x2x2 hasn't been made until now. Both puzzles look fantastic, great work!

I'd love to see them stickered as well!

Beautiful!

Which printing service did you use? Is that the SLS material, just polished, or is it something else?

I do like your attention to details, and how you capped the cubies.

Nothing new, but I'll say it again: Very beautiful! :D
I would love to see them available from a 3D printing service (Shapeways?) or have them mass-produced.

Well the thing is, that the simplest form called Super X, which is Dino plus 2x2x2 is not so simple at all. In theory yes. But the mechanism is extremely unstable. A lot of good puzzle constructors have tried their shot. I think the best version made was by Drewseph. And even he relied on a lot of magnets in there.

So here is my question to AJ: can you tell us about the turning of the curvy dino - 2x2x2 hybrid? Or even record a video. It doesn't seem to use any tricks like magnets does it?
Is it unstable or is the simple idea of making the dino curvy cut one solution to the Super X problem that noone was aware of?
I am excited to know!

EDIT: Might those holes in the edgepieces be for the possibility of magnets? I think it was actually the Dino turns that needed magnets badly, not so much the 2x2x2 turns. I might recall this wrong though.

To clarify, I didn't mean to imply that the mechanism is simple (as you correctly say, most likely the contrary), but only that the appearance is simple. I find that simplicity to be quite beautiful.

I'll also second your call for a video, and more information on the mechanism. It would be great to see it available on Shapeways too!

Due to the curved cuts, its very similar to Oskar's Redi cube, which means the 2x2 hybrid is equal to a lower order version of Eric Vergo's Redi 3x3?

Anyway beautiful prints.

Beautiful...

A red Bubbloid111. I like it.

I'm going to guess the red and blue puzzle have the same mechanism and its just the edge pieces which are different. Can the red corners with the blue edges still make the 2x2x2 turns?

I too would like to see a video.

And if these were 3D printed on Shapeways. may I ask if you dyed them yourself? I'd like to know the type of dye you used if so. The colors came out great.

Thanks,
Carl

Those really look fantastic! Is that Polished WSF? It looks a bit smoother than their typical WSF. The colors really did come out very saturated and vibrant.

Does anybody know how Shapeways dyes? They have a quick "factory tour" video up and they show the dye station and the setup looks more like a cold chemical bath than a hot dyeing process.

I think Shapeways only offers these colors in the "polished" WSF material, so I'm pretty sure.

I didn't even think of that possibility because the last time I checked I didn't remember seeing Blue being offered. But yes... its there now. So I tend to agree these are likely colored and polished WSF from Shapeways.

I'd LOVE to know as well.

Oh and I also wish Shapways would offer a way you could specify different colors for different parts in the model. I'm just thinking of all the work I put into my first Gear Cube Kit. It would be nice to have all the tiles and gears already in the correct colors without having to make 7 different models. Though I'm still not seeing Orange, Yellow, or Green being offered.

Beautiful work! I love the puzzles, but can't decide if it is Spider Man or Super Man? Perhaps one of each?

I really like the look of the 2x2x2. It would make a great gift, you wouldn't even have to wrap it! It already looks like it's gift wrapped!

Also, I agree with some of the previous posters who would like to see a stickered version, especially were it available for purchase. It seems like a very fun puzzle with a lot of re-solve value. Great work, AJ!

Hey guys, thank you so much for yours attention. :D
Nestor wrote:Any chance these get sold on SW?
Maybe not, the core is not made by shapeways.
Andreas Nortmann wrote:Do you want to sticker the puzzles?
Yes,I will update later.
Aleksey wrote:Which printing service did you use? Is that the SLS material, just polished, or is it something else?
It was printed by shapeways. the material is dyed version of WSF.

Yes, the mechanism like Super X, I didn't use magnets in the picture one. but I prepared holes in the edge for magnets.
This version are not stable, so I think is not the time record a video.

This two puzzle used the same core. the blue one just the edge pieces different. and the color, shapeways dyed.

If it is the Super X you want, you can buy a very good one in TomZ's shop here.
What I like about this puzzle are the curvy lines :) It is similarly beautiful as the Curvy Copter, the Bubbloid 122 and the Curvy Copter Skewb.
