I did it! I know this version is poppy, I plan to work on that, but I did it.

I used the surface revolve to make cutting planes in my own sort of way. :D

It's not all the way, just a rough draft I did real quick!

It was this post that helped me most of all, really. viewtopic.php?p=139110#p139110

If anyone has a problem with any of the screenshots, I'll take it down.

If you plan on getting this made, keep in mind that just filleting it will give you a flaw in the final puzzle.

Yeah, I'm not done with this. Just posting what I did in a half hour or so.

What flaws would be caused by filleting?

I'm not answering your question, just commenting on it :P

Very nice, looks pretty cool, I still haven't finished my design yet

I really like the picture with the 4 "centre" pieces taken away, looks quite gothic (as in the architecture of it, not actual goths...)

The "flaw" is that when you fillet the outer pieces, the axis arms will become visible. Take a look at TomZ's version and you will see exactly what will happen. This was also present in my first design, but my most recent version has kept the axis arms hidden. Katsuhiko's Bevel Cube has the axis arms hidden from view, so apparently he took this into account when he built his puzzles.

Yeah. I've seen posts about that before, I know what to do to make it not happen.

Working on making the center caps and fixing that fillet problem.

So I have the filleting figured out and did a corner, have to do an edge and see how it turns out. The solution was killer easy.

I'm using 1mm fillets, do you think this is enough?

Also, the final design comes out to 62 mm edge length. I know I like larger puzzles, but what does everyone else think? Should I go back a bit and make it end up 57 mm?

57mm is generally what people use when making cubic puzzles, but that's really up to you. Make it as big, or as small as you wish. Being creative with puzzle designing is what makes it fun! :)

I also just finished one. It looks pretty good, but the core is all funky. I'm trying to figure out the 12 armed spider and fillets right now.

It'd be cool to build this onto a mini 2x2x2, but it'd be MASSIVE unless you did some truncation on the 2x2x2, which could allow it to be a bit smaller, but not by much. How far into a mini ES 2x2x2 can you cut, anyway?

Probably very very little. For the mini Rhombiminx I just built up the outer shell. 2x2s are deep cut so no matter how much you add on it will still be the same proportions.

Yeah, but trying to fit a rhombic dodecahedral core onto a mini 2x2x2 and end up with a small puzzle? Not happening. :(

Added a few features to help prevent popping, and I'm working on a total redesign in the next few days, then I'll get my STL files and get a quote!

I decided against a total redesign. My version (I believe) is the same as Tomz's and Adam's designs so it should be successful. I havent bothered to fillet the parts yet but I'm getting there. Also I need to figure out the spider core...

I also experimented a bit with the move/copy commands and got to examine the jumbling moves. Its quite a cool coincidence that they just happen to intersect at the perfect angle to allow it to turn at about 70* rotation.. And yes, I did check, my version is jumbleable.

It's not exactly 70˚. It's an irrational number that's approximately 70.53˚.

If somebody does go ahead and builds their helicopter cube design, maybe this is something to consider:

I wish I could figure out if there is a way to click and drag the pieces around. :(
