Are the master pieces metal or plastic?

Plastic.
I wish I had the ability to make the metal ones, but I have no access to a CNC machine or anybody who would know how to use one.

I wish I had the ability to make this puzzle after buying the master pieces. But I know it would be a waste for me to buy them to even try.

I kinda figured this would be a problem; however, as I said in my auction, I am willing to help people with the molding process.
I can direct you to exactly what you need for this as well as how to do it.
The thing you need to evaluate is how fast you actually want to get it done. It took me a year because I just didn't have the time to sit down and work on it because of school, but I did get it done

Just out of curiousity, have you solved you gigaminx yet?
And how heavy is it? It seems like it would be quite heavy for a twistypuzzle.

I've gone through and solved it twice.
It is still a prototype and it catches a lot.
For the master sets that I am selling, I will hopefully get rid of some of these defects.
And yes, it is quite heavy, but I haven't actually set it on a scale.

Following the discussion of another thread I really want to thank you to open your designs in this way to other puzzle builders (This comment should be no offense to any other builder, who cares in the one or other way about his design at all!!! I can follow the reasons in each individual case very well.). Your Gigaminx is really a fantastic puzzle and I really appreciate, that you allow others to copy it.
Although it may be the case, that after you created the first one and perhaps you don't have or want to spend the time on more Gigaminxes, I hope you don't feel bad, when sooner or later copies based on your design are sold for high prices. I guess, there will be a lot of buyers.
I neither have time and experience to build puzzles myself, but are always happy and sometimes also surprised about the new creations all the builders present here. I don't comment the several posts with aahs and oohs (sorry, that not my 'style', I should work on it to encourage the builders and give them the attention they should get), but although keeping silent most of the time, I am watching this VERY interestedly.
(Being quite selfish) I hope to see Gigaminx replicates sooner or later on ebay.
With full respect (and a happy new year to all of you)
- Frank -

We all know that a Rubik's Cube has 43-quintillion-ish possible combinations, but do you know how many the gigaminx has?
Also how expensive do you think it would be for us to duplicate your masters?

Number of combinations? Let's see...
There are 20 corner pieces, 60 edgewings, 30 middle edges, 60 xcenters, 60 +centers.
So the maximum is (20!)*3^20*(60!)*(30!)*2^30*(60!)*(60!) positions. This limit is not reached because of corner twist parity (/3), middle edge flip parity (/2), xcenters being the same (/(5!)^12), +centers being the same (/(5!)^12), and even permutation of corners and middle edges (/2), bringing the total to
(20!)*(3^19)*(60!)^3*(30!)*(2^28)/(5!)^24 = 1.459 x 10^264 positions
(if my calculations are correct).

I'm sure there are things I missed... I guess that since turning a slice is even in terms of corners and middle edges, you have more than one permutation parity restriction. But I don't see how you could get a *larger* number...

Hopefully the winner is legit and not just someone who wanted to mess up the auction.
Congrats Tyler!
I wonder if selling the master pieces implies any sort of licensing? You're obviously intending the winner to make one, but what if they make 1000?

I'm pretty sure that an invention is in the public domain a year after it is revealed. Seeing how the first post was in Dec 2005 if my fact is correct, he has no more claim over the puzzle than any of the rest of us...except of course bragging rights.

I'm going to have the auction up in a day or so ...
I've been out all weekend and the hotel I was at didn't have internet.
I'll add the auction to the top post and probably repost it here.
Happy Bidding.

Just curious, what would the approximate cost be to go from the master parts to a working puzzle?

I just saw that it says if you can find more megaminx knockoffs you will include them.
cubefans on eBay is where I got my megaminxes. $6 a piece plus shipping. And no, this wouldn't be ruining a hidden treasure on eBay because all of his products are under buy it now, no bidding required, just buying them.
I also noticed rubik here on the forums sells the same megaminxes in his store, im not sure if the shipping is more than cubefans, but I think the actual price per megaminx is lower.

Right, but what's the S&H
cubefans on eBay has $6 for the first item and $3.80 for all additional items. cube4you.com might have them at a cheaper price, but if S&H is more, or doesn't have the discount for additional items, eBay would be the way to go, depending on the actual prices for S&H and the amount of megaminxes you would plan on buying.
And also, originally I thought rubik and cubefans were the same person, but I'm not so sure anymore, does anyone know for a fact if they are the same? I know they carry similar items, but they could just buy from the same distributor.

Ed's thinkshop has the mega's for $6 each. I would recommend him for sure! I paid $6 shipping for my entire order which was 7 items.
Thanks again Ed!

I think I have an Idea for solving the Gigaminx... just solve centers like a 5x5x5 and then solve the edges just like a 5x5x5 and then solve a megaminx...!! That is probably how you did it? Correct?

probibly because 3x3 : megaminx :: 5x5 : gigaminx. it is like a
dodecagonal 5x5. lol

I'd love to know if the winners of the Gigaminx master molds are indeed making more puzzles, or whether the funds Mr. Fox has raised is helping with possible mass production. I'd soooo get a Gigaminx if they were in the stores.

Another dead thread... eww It's not as easy as you think to get something mass produced. Also the Gigaminx was said to be kinda stiff and turns like a Alexander's Star from what I've heard.

As for Tyler's Gigaminx's turning ability, he is/was working on an undated model that turns better. Or so I was informed by an anonymous source, which I believe was later confirmed by Tyler himself.
