Perhaps he wanted to maintain the aesthetic appearance of having evenly sized sides.

Vadim, After finishing the Dodec and Star Prisms just a few days ago, I take my hat off to you on another wonderful creation. I too am looking into "Prisms" as wonderful posibilities for making puzzles. Keep up the good work my friend.

Max,
I did not cut the corners right back bacause at first I wanted to leave myself some lee-way for filing etc. But later I did notice that I made sides of even size + I really liked the look of it with these extra bits. Don't know why...

NICE.
Amongst my many (25 plus), ever growing sketches/ideas for further Square 1 transformations there was a Octagonal Prism. But this was a standard trimming of the corners - edge to edge. Your trimming with retaining a section of flat works excellent and gives the puzzle that extra appeal. Excellent.
