I've never tried messing with a UFO puzzle before, but seeing things like this make me want to.

Is that a UFO mechanism or is it the mod where you have to bind 3 cubies together with the mechanism? I'm guessing the latter.
Anyway, great job David!

No, that's not from a UFO but from normal Square1 mech.
It was my first mod, that's why the general appearance is a bit... ugly :)

Does that mean that three of the "starspikes" are "bandaged" together with one of the middle layer parts?

no no no
All pieces can move individually. But it's just that it's only have a twisting axle, like in puck or square 1, and not 3 like on a rubik cheese or UFO.

But, I can only see the two outer layers, so how do you move the middle layer to the wanted place to be able to twist throu the vertical "split"?

hahahahhaha. It's aleatory
That's the second issue of that puzzle.
Let's think in that way:
First of all, you have to discover how to be able to put the ''middle'' layer in the correct position in order to twist, and then just try to solve it...... hehehehee
 :):)
Two puzzles in one, Dexterity and Twisty :)

So are you saying by "aleatory" it is truly a matter of luck with friction or do you have something like in a combination lock wherein one half has a flag which can turn the middle layer allowing positioning and then moving the half with the flag away for final positioning of the half (within one turn)? If that is the mechanism it is both clever and devious. It would make solving very tough. I like it.
Great puzzle!

Oh, so it's not just a build up on a UFO?

Sorry, I do tend to be long.
I was wondering if the mechanism uses a flag (a part that sticks in on one of the outer pieces which hits one of the center row pieces). This would allow the center layer to be moved around to the correct position. The outside piece could then be backed off to the desired position. Kind of like a combination lock.
