This is a collection of simulators for twisty puzzle. If you have any to contribute, please post them and I will update the list. Thanks!

Twisty Puzzle Packages:

GelatinBrain
I think everyone knows about this one. Includes pretty much everything "normal": all the platonic solids, all turn types, all depths, circles puzzles, super stickering, and hybrids. There's lots more in there, too. 600+ puzzles total. Also supports text input and macros.

Kai Yan's Simulator
Note: you need to e-mail the creator to get the password before you can install. This simulator includes many of the less 'traditional' puzzles that are not included in GelatinBrain. Think curved cuts, gears, non-platonic geometry, Dayan Gems, shape mods, shapeshifters, jumblers, etc. Nearly 500 puzzle total. A truly under appreciated simulator. Used to be updated quite frequently but not so much lately. I don't know who to give credit to, unfortunately.

Circle Cubes by Bo Hu, translated / packaged by schuma
A beautifully presented collection of circle puzzles. Includes all the expected puzzles and their bandaged / planetary versions, but then takes it about 5 steps further. There's double circles, 2-faces, Bermuda Cubes, Dayan Gem IIIs, and every kind of face-turning dodecahedron you can imagine. Convenient drop down menus include pre-made planet bandaging, but on most puzzles you can define your own custom bandaging / 2-facing if you wish.

Bo Hu's Simulators
Wow. This one is a biggie. There are HUNDREDS of puzzles here, many truly unique. The applet is split up based on geometry, and within each category there are dozens of puzzles. Cut depths can be customized in most cases, and many even allow jumbling! However, none of these have been translated, unlike the "Circle Puzzles" pack, so navigation can be a bit tricky. There are too many to list individually, but here are some quick links to some of my favorites:

- Shape-shifting Cuboids [customizable sizes]
- Edge-Turning Icosahedrons [w/ jumbling] [translated into English]
- Face-Turning Icosahedrons [w/ jumbling] [translated into English]
- Pentagonal Icosahedrons [w/ jumbling]
- Deltoidal Icositetrahedrons [w/ jumbling]
- Rhombic Dodecahedrons [w/ jumbling]
- Truncated Icosahedrons
- Higher-order Minxes
- Bermuda Megaminxes [aka Bermudaminxes]
- And many, many more!

Ultimate Magic Cube 1 & 2
Allows you to create your own puzzles. You start with a platonic solid and define you own cuts. You can choose face, vertex, or edge turning at whatever depth you please. Multiple layers, hybrids and bandaging also supported. With the release of version 2, more complex shapes are possible, including shapeshifting cuboids, cubes, and shapemods.

Magic Tile
Turns geometric tilings into twisty puzzles. Includes Euclidean, hyperbolic, and elliptical geometry. If that's not weird enough for you, there's also some truly bizarre stuff - infinite regular polyhedra and 4D skew polyhedra. What.

Virtual Cubes by Walter RandelsHofer
Some basic puzzles [2x2-7x7 + some simple shapemods]. What makes this unique is the sticker and color variations - super cubes, 4-color, 8-color, sudoku, Tartan, etc.

Cube2.1 by Andrea
Among some simpler puzzles, it includes some shapeshifters: Square 1, 4x4x6, Bermuda Cubes, Helicopter Cube w/ jumbling, and Traiphum's Shapeshifting 5x5x5.

Yaps by Andrea.
Mostly superseded by Cube2.1. I included this one here because of the Crazy Pentahedron puzzles, which are strangely missing from Cube2.1. There is also a very nice option for text input of sequences, which is extremely helpful for finding sequences on the Crazy 3x3x3 Plus and Crazy Pentahedron series.

pCubes by Boris
A promising new simulator, still in it's infancy. It's based on the source code of Andrea's Cube 2.1 [see above]. In addition to Andrea's creations, new puzzles include Bermuda columns / house / star, Rainbow Cube, and Skewb, with more to come in the future!

2D Circle Puzzles by HeavyTanHat
22 variations of 2D circle puzzles, ranging from very simple to quite complex. Cut depths vary, and some feature 2 concentric circles. 3 of the layouts feature bandaging.

CubixPlayer2
Allows you to solve super-multi cubes up to 7x7x7 [cubes within cubes, super stickered]. In the interest of preservation, I have uploaded it here. I don't trust a dead Yahoo group to be around forever.

IsoCubeSim by Michael Gottlieb [aka qqwref]
Not the best, but it does cuboids, including super-stickered versions. Does not do shapeshifting, unfortunately.

Jaap's Puzzle Page
Has various simulators for less complex puzzles. Simulators, if available, can be found on each individual puzzle's page. Also of note is the Jaap's Sphere applet, which is useful for visualizing the geometry of different twisty puzzles as cuts on a sphere.

Individual Puzzles:

Rainbow Nautilus simulator by Andrea
Clockwork 4x4x4 - simulator by schuma, puzzle by Timur
Lollipop: A Complex 2D Puzzle by schuma
ReflecCube by Schuma
Rubik's Slide Simulator by TomZ
Spinpossible

Higher-Dimensional Puzzles:

Magic Cube Ultimate
66 different puzzles, mostly 4D but a few in 5D and 6D. Puzzles are based on 16-, 24-, 32-, 48-, 120-, and 600-cell geometry, as well as simplex, cubes, and cuboids. Strong support for using and creating macros.

MagicCube2D - 2D analog of the Rubik's cube
MagicCube3D - 3D cube simulator in the style of a 4D simulator
MagicCube4D- Only 4D puzzles. Cubes, simplexes, duoprisms and the 120-cells of various orders.
MagicCube5D - Just 5D cubes from 2^5 to 7^5
MagicCube7D - Just 4D-7D cubes from 3^4 to 5^7
Magic 120-Cell - Just the 120-cell in several sticker variations.
Magic Hyperbolic Tile {6,3,3} - Hyperbolic space tilings turned into twisty puzzles. 7 color variations.

N-Teract - A 2^4 cube applet. Very simple implementation.
4D Rubik's Cube - another 2^4 simulator

Hi all. I have updated the list a bit. I removed the download link and instead have links to each individual simulator, along with descriptions. I have updated the list with some other simulators as well - Kai Yan's simulator, Andrea's Cube 2.1 [updated from 1.2], Bo Hu's jumbling ETI and FTI, IsoCubeSim, Clockwork 4x4x4, Lollipop, and Rainbow Nautilus.

Simulators are still missing / non-existent for the following for puzzles [among others]. If anyone is good with programming, the challenge has been issued!

- WitEden's Camouflage Cube series / Mefferet'sPocket 2x2 Cube
- Calvin's 3x3x5 series - i-Cube, L-Cube, T-Cube, X-Cube, Trio Cube, Temple Cube, Cross Cube [plus circle versions??]
- Burgo's CrazyB4 Kit [this would be GOLD right now]
- Shapeshifting cuboids
- 2D circle puzzles [I've heard of something called Triplex but can't find it anywhere...]
- Rubik's Magic

PS - is it a faux pas to request a sticky on your own post?

No and I think this is a pretty good candidate for a sticky.

Hi Seth,

The version cube2.1 is the better version. Only the version 2.1 turns the Traiphum shapeshifting 5x5x5 correct.

Cheers,
Andrea

I don't see mention of the CubixPlayer2 program made by Per Kristen Fredlund that allowed you to Super Super solve NxNxN puzzles. These are now called Multi and Super-Multi cubes to avoid the double meaning of super. This dates back to at least April 2004 and I think you can still get it here.

http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/speedsolvingrubikscube/conversations/topics/10154

I haven't heard this name mentioned in years so I honesly don't know if anyone is still using this program or not but it is one of the things that certainly influenced me and my desire to collect and design Multi-puzzles.

For "other-dimensional" puzzles, there's:

I have updated the list with CubixPlayer2 [thanks, Carl!] and a whole bunch of higher-dimensional puzzles [thanks, Brandon!], as well as added a note about the Jaap's Sphere applet. You will all be pleased to know that Kai Yan's simulator has been updated recently! We now have simulators for the mysteriously yet-unreleased Dayan Gem VI. Also included are the Master Rex and Dayan Gem VII. Very cool!

I would again like to issue a challenge to any programmer out there to begin working on a CrazyB4 cube kit simulator. Burgo's expansion kit will soon be released with 10+ center / face-pattern combinations. We currently can simulate only the most basic [just 0- and 1-faces] with Bo Hu's circle cubes program. A simulator would be amazing not only for the solvers but also for the many that do not have kits due to the low production numbers.

Do we know of any 2d rotational simulators? Like the Rotoscope and Geranium, that kind of puzzle.

Also This Is an awesome sliding tile puzzle simulator. I think it tops out at over 200 tiles so you can have lots of fun with it.

I started a 2D simulator in HTML5/Javascript a while back, but the host has disappeared. I've put it up on my personal server at http://hth.no-ip.org. It's very simple at this point, but I'd like to work more on it at some point.

Are there any keyboard controls or just mouse?

Currently just mouse. It was originally written for touchscreen use, so nothing but the 1st mouse button is used.

Hi, all! I have updated the list based on the suggestions from grigr and others. I also included Boris's pCube simulator that is currently in development, as well as gave some direct links to some of Bo Hu's more interesting applets. Two of the items from my original wishlist have now been satisfied, but there is still a lack of simulators for the following:

- WitEden's Camouflage Cube series / Mefferet'sPocket 2x2 Cube
- Calvin's 3x3x5 series - i-Cube, L-Cube, T-Cube, X-Cube, Trio Cube, Temple Cube, Cross Cube [plus circle versions??]
- Burgo's Crazy2Face / CrazyB4 Kit
- Rubik's Magic

I would again like to issue the challenge to all you programmers out there. Please help us complete the list and make all twisties available in digital form!

Bo Hu's shape-shifting cuboid simulator (http://www.mf8-china.com/java/hubo/FMNtool.html) supports these since you can bandage pieces, extend layers, and choose an off-set centre of rotation. (Pressing F10 gives you a bandaging GUI; you define bandaging by selecting diagonally opposite corners of the bandaged block. Once you're done you can press F3 to be told the bandaging code.)

The following settings should give a 3x3x3 Camouflage cube (with green, yellow and orange sides extended), although I don't have a physical copy of the puzzle to check against. The field names are those given by Google Chrome's page translation.
(Here's a direct link to the applet with 3x3x3 Camouflage cube settings.)

X Layer: 1,1,1,2;
Y Layer: 1,1,1,2;

The 2 colour Pocket Cube:
Code:

Dear puzzlers,

unfortunately most of the simulators dont run on my computer.
I use win 7.
I.e. the programs:
-Ultimate Magic Cube 2.exe
-MagicPolyhedraExe v1.1-1 (gelantinBrain)
dont run. I start the exe-files but nothing happens.

Running the simulators online doesnt work either.
Java refuses to load the simulators because of security issues.
I tried several things.
On my java control panel I choosed the lowest security settings possible and I wrote the URLs in the site exceptions.
I reinstalled Java. I ran the control panel with administrator rights and changed the security settings via the cmd. Now I am slowly runing out of ideas :(

Btw, I found out that in future releases java plans not to allow the user anymore to decide if he wants to run a "unsecure" java file.
I am already at the point where my computer decides which files I am allowed to execute and which not.

Does anybody have experiences with that kind of problems.
Any ideas how I can use these simulators? (Besides changing to linux  )

Thank you very much in advance.

Best regards,
Dr. Twist

Firstly, I'd suggest completely uninstalling Java, including all the older versions. The Java automatic updater doesn't (completely) uninstall the old versions and I think these left-overs caused me some problems with security settings too. There are uninstall instructions on the Java web site, follow the instructions for manual uninstall, but don't use the Java uninstall tool.

After a clean install try changing the Java security settings again. I've got the security level set to Medium and Bo Hu's applets run after clicking through the security prompt.

Under the download link on the Ultimate Magic Cube web page, there is a notice: You also need to install Dot Net Framework 4 and XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0. After I installed both of these, Ultimate Magic Cube 2 worked perfectly.

I've had no problems with the .exe version of GelatinBrain, but maybe it's worth seeing if the Java version works. Download and run installer.jar from the installer page. Once it's installed, run polyhedra.jar.

Another suggestion would be run the .exe from the command prompt, it may print out an error message which would help identify the problem.

Thank you very much scharlton! Very good tips.
Unfortunately whatever I tried doesnt help to get things running.

There was another thread from2011 which describes all that problems installing Gelantibrain.
Most links are not working anymore and I think there are no updates. So I give up :-(

(About one year ago I was able to run gelantinbrain online - but now Java decided that this is too dangerous. I reinstalled it and deactivated every single security setting, I put skynet on the site exception list, but Java still refuses to load the applet - it is really ridiculous  )

At least the new cube simulator from Boris works. *Happy* :D

Thank you Boris!!

Best regards - Dr. Twist

It is wonderful seeing these puzzles simulated so shortly after their publication, especially as some of these core mods received zero response at the Twisty Puzzles Forum.
Don't judge too much from the lack of response. I spent all day Sunday playing with GAP and analyzed the Crazy Plus and DoDep puzzles looking at the Normal, Super, Multi, and Super-Multi versions. So far that hasn't generated a reply yet either. I think it's just too much to digest and even those that would find it interesting might not be sure what to say. I personally find these core mods very interesting but between work and other commitments I haven't had the time to think about these as much as I would like and its not uncommon for me to stay quiet for fear of saying something stupid or obvious before I've digested the topic. So don't assume everyone is bored... some have been stunned into silence... or off adapating their simulators apparently.

A question... are the puzzles in these simulators fudged? The real puzzles needed to be fudged as the same pieces were being used for multiple geometries. However I don't think the simulators need to be fudged as they don't need to be using the exact same pieces. But I see indications that the gap between the pieces isn't a constant so I'm guessing these may be made exactly the same way as Oskar made his example. Is there one set of pieces which was modeled and then applied to all these geometries? Or am I looking at rendering issues and seing something that isn't there? I haven't actually played with the simulators yet so maybe this is just an issue with the images post here.

Carl

It is good to see the simulator. Guess what, I started on developing Bermuda Octahedron about a month ago, see sketch below. My attempt still has some big gaps in order to fudge everything in place. Looking at the simulator, I guess there is a way to build this without those big gaps. Good inspiration!

Evgeniy, thank you for the reference and pictures. Those look like great puzzles, some of which absolutely bizarre! I hope they will be brought into reality some time. Seeing all of these, I hope my Fairly Fudged gets "Bermudized" as well.
