I just want to know how old most of you were when you started cubing and how long you've been at it. (my parents think that it is a short term thing  ) Thanks!

I solved my first cube just a few months ago (October). I've had that cube since I was 1 (12 whole years  ). Since then I have bought 9 more puzzles.

I started cubing when I was 16, but only three weeks later I turned 17. It's been about a year and I solve my puzzles every single day and have collected 30 in the past ~6 months! (I only bought a faster 3x3 and didn't get into the other puzzles for a while)

I solved my first cube when I was 14. Since then I've collected maybe 50 puzzles.

I started solving when the Cube came out in 1981 (when I was 10), but had a 25-year break since then.

In 2002 when I was 18 my college roomate picked up a very low quality 3x3x3 for $0.99

After learning (memorizing) how to solve it I eventually got a 4x4x4 and then a 5x5x5. At some point I felt like I knew everything about NxNxN cubes (oh how wrong I was!) so I went looking for another challenge. I decided I was going to solve the 3x3x3x3 which after about a week i figured out well enough to actually do. That was November 2009. After that I quickly solved the 4x4x4x4 and 5x5x5x5 and went looking for even more challenges.

Fast forward to 2014 and almost all of my free time and entertainment "budget" goes into various twisty activities.

I started in April 2010 just after I turned 10. I did it for a year and a half, then fell out of it for a year. Then I came back in October 2012, when I saw the 4x4x6 was out. Ever since then, my puzzle collection has grown from 20 to about 120 puzzles. Also, I might be the youngest member on this forum, seeing as you have to be at least 13.

I've played with Rubik's cubes during my childhood but I only learnt to solve it at 12 years of age.

Looking at the answers, I fell like I was off to a late start. :o
I got my first cube when I was 22, I have now been cubing for 4 Years now, collected around 75 cubes, and solved all but one of them.

I had a Hungarian cube in 1979 when I was 13!! God I'm soooo old!!!

Over the next few years when Rubik produced a 4x4 and 5x5 I got them and solved them. After that there was a 30 year break and I've been solving and collecting for the last 3 years. I have about 140 twisties now and about 700 other types of puzzles! I appear to have developed an addiction!

I had all those puzzles we all seemed to have here.. the whip it, the rubik, missing link, 15 sliding, that stuff. I was 8 or so at the time, couldn't solve any of them EXCEPT for the whip it. I could even solve the four layer one.

After that a big gap until about 2 years ago, and I just turned 41 this past December.

I must have been 20 when I first saw a Rubik's Cube, but I was already a puzzler when I was very young: tangram, solitaire, kumiki's, wire puzzles, jigsaws....... :D

I could reuse you post to some degree, Kevin. Small correction: I was 20 years older than you in 1979 and I do not feel sooo old today
I was interested in wire puzzles as a boy, though. And I got a 15-puzzle at the age of 11.

My first cubes got lost in a fire in my house in 1983. I have never given up twisty puzzles since 1979.
My interest was newly inflamed by the Internet around 1996.
The V-Cubes (V-5, V-6, V-7) pushed me again in 2008.
My wife says, that my real addiction started, when I became a member here in 2009

I was 5 years old and I got a 15 puzzle with a picture on the back side from my grandpa.
He couldn't solve it. I solved it very fast.
With 17 years (1980) I tried to solve the Rubiks Cube under the table, at school.
Two girls in my class solved Rubik's Cubes under the table. The boys didn't own a Rubik's Cube. The teacher was angry.
Then I got a solution from a news paper.
After many years I continued solving puzzles.

5th grade is when I started. I'm in 12th now, so its been some time.

I believe I was 10-11 years of age at the time. And (oh boy) I DIDN'T use the internet to learn the solution, but instead the pamphlet that came with the "Rubik's cube" and studied it for 24 hours non-stop (yes, no bathroom, no breaks, no food -bad idea, dont do that-, and constant reading, thinking, and applying) and attempted my first solve... 8 minutes, 47.xx seconds.

Advance to now, I'm at 50-30 second averages, and STILL haven't used any other solving solution. I use Beginner's and no PLL or OLL approach. Cross>corners>middle layer>edges>corners>solved.

Been working on 3x3 Ortega method and Roux, but it's not as interesting to me as beginner's

Beginner solution for 7-8 years, and proud... If I used a better solution, I'd be much faster...

I was around 4 or 5 when I remember the Rubik's cube coming out. I played with it, but couldn't figure out how to solve it. My older brother's friends seemed to like those types of puzzles but couldn't solve it either. They had like the Orb, Missing Link, Pyraminx, etc. and could solve some of those.

Then I think in 1987 or so, the Rubik's Magic came out and I fell in love that. I managed to find a crazy long solution for it that wasn't the simple intended one. Then I went on to solve things like the Whip it, Pyraminx and Missing Link, but still couldn't solve the Rubik's cube.

Then my senior year in highschool, a friend of mine had a Rubik's cube, I borrowed it and was determined to figure it out. Eventually I actually did, but it was very lucky. I came up with a layer by layer method. I could do the first two layers, but was somewhat stuck, I would keep repeating what turned out to be a backwards sune and hope eventually it would solve. I would mix the second layer up a little bit and repeat. Eventually it ended up solved!

Then my freshman or sophomore year of college, I discovered on the internet people had different solutions to the cube. Just looking over them, most looked pretty complicated, but one of them made sense and involved only 3 algorithms. Two of the algorithms I actually came up with on my own when I first tried to solve it. The big thing I learned was just changing the order of solving helped a lot. It was a corners first method and I highly doubt I would have even thought to try that on my own ever.

Anyway, my senior year as a graduation present to myself, I purchased pretty much every puzzle Livewire puzzles had and since then I've been solving and collecting like crazy.

I will have been solving for a year this march, and I will be 25 this year. So far I haven't solved anything too complicated because I haven't bought anything harder than a 4x4, megaminx, or a skewb ultimate.

If I'm remembering correctly, I started when I was a junior in high school, so that was 2004-2005. So, 16 or 17 years old.

I didn't really get serious about it until I was already in college, though, sometime in 2006.
