We are knee deep in remodeling our basement now and are considering a sliding barn door, but I think I'm going to push for this instead. It looks pretty straight forward to make. Let's see if the wife agrees...

There is soft padding in the connection points, one of his other videos shows him pinching his fingers with no pain.

I agree, looks like a couple of piano hinges and a few pivot points, not too complex, but very elegant.
