I live in the USA and I love ketchup.

I have heard that in Germany there is a mythical condiment called "curry ketchup" that will knock my ketchup-loving socks off. I don't know what brands are best but Amazon seems to charge an awful lot for a bottle no matter what. Is that just because of import costs? How much does it really cost to send a bottle of ketchup through the mail? Could I save a significant amount of money by asking someone to just buy it and ship it?

You can make your own by adding cheap curry powder to sweet mango chutney. It's actually quite disgusting, but then Germany with its pork and cabbage isn't exactly known for its gastronomic finesse!

Try British HP Sauce instead.

Looks like you can try a bottle for between $11 and $13 with free shipping via Amazon Prime.

http://www.amazon.com/Hela-Curry-Gewurz-Ketchup-Mild/dp/B000NY3122/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1388736430&sr=1-1&keywords=curry+ketchup

http://www.amazon.com/Hela-Curry-Gewurz-Hot-Ketchup/dp/B000NY4SA6/ref=sr_1_2?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1388736430&sr=1-2&keywords=curry+ketchup

That seems like pretty reasonable prices to me.

Hey,

In the Netherlands, we also have this. I really like it, a lot more than regular ketchup, however, this tastes nothing like ketchup at all. I hope you like it!

It does indeed taste different than ketchup :)

Just don't moan about the shipping prices, this IS what we pay for package mail sent outside Europe :(

While you're at it, order some more typical Dutch products, like bitterballen, kroketten or a frikandel! Highly recommended!

There are more stores that sell Dutch stuff, you might want to google around and see if there is one that gives you better shipping than this one.

A lot of American cities have "International Food" markets where they sell these special items. Perhaps try there. I still remember the one in Dallas, beside Texas Instruments at the intersection of Floyd and Floyd. Great Samosas and every spice and condiment you can imagine.

Curry Ketchup! Best stuff in the world. Thanks for the reminder. We've just ran out. I need to go buy some more. Love the German hot dog sauce too.

Your taste buds will love you. Especially if you combine it with Mayo and dip your fries into it!

How hot is curry and what does it taste like. I never had any.

Combined with mayo and add a chopped up onion, yumm!

The add mayo thing actually got mass produced and is in stores now, it's called Joppiesaus, also very yummy!

Depends how much chilli, but it ranges from barely detectable korma to burn your face off (and butt, when it comes out the other end!) phal. But you must try a madras, which is reasonably hot, enough to make you sweat a bit and churn out a bit of adrenalin/endorphin, but not too hot to miss the delicious aromatic flavour. How you have survived without ever trying a curry I don't know. Good indian curries are rare here in Switzerland, but I will be back in UK for a few days, and a good curry or two is high on my mind right now!

If a curry doesn't make you sweat and your nose run it isn't worth eating!

Madras is my favourite as it happens :)

Joppiesaus is pretty yummy for sure

I've found that adding taco seasoning powder and a *very* small amount of chipotle powder to my ketchup really spices things up nicely. Still tastes like ketchup too. Perfect for improving bad out-of-the-can chili (with some chili powder to boot) or grilled cheese. Archer Farms from Target seems to work well for the Chipotle powder and I prefer Old El Paso taco seasoning.

Now that is somebody that was desperate for a curry! haha

I'm quite lucky (and unlucky) where I live, I have something in the region of 15 Indian restaurants within a 5 minute walk of my house.

Almost as many Chinese, along with other takeaways too. Makes me not want to cook!

If you're outside of Texas you've probably never heard of this... but Whataburger has some AMAZING spicy ketchup. They originally only had it for a short time, but after literally the entire state kept asking them to bring it back, its now available 24/7/365. Shortly after they started selling it in the bottle at local HEB grocery stores, and now it has made its way onto amazon...

You should visit South Shields (about 4 miles from where I live), there are 13 curry restaurants on Ocean Road alone

The curry katsup I remember from Germany wasn't spicy, just a curry flavor.

Not that there is anything wrong with spicy katsup, but I wouldn't consider them the same thing.

Dave

P.S. Mmmmm Currywurst...

I recently found some jalapeno ketchup at walmart. It was sooo good with the cajun fries from five guys. :D

I'll be back in Germany in May and can't wait to get my mouth around some currywurst! I may only eat that while I'm there. Might even have to bring back a bottle or two. When I'm in Amsterdam a few weeks after that, I'll have to try that Joppiesaus Kattenvriendin spoke of.

Can you record video? Up close, and slowed down, with saxophone music, maybe?
