so what is everyone's favourite algorithm and why?

mine is the sune (R U R' U R U2 R'), this is a OLL and i like it becuase it can do it really fast, and it is the the only algorithm i use for OLL at the minute....

My favorite algs are usually the most recent ones I developed. Here are four. (lower case letters mean slice only)

This is for the "barrow" orientation of the corners (flips two edges). R' F'U' F U F' U' F U R.

For flipping over two adjacent edges, one flipped edge is the one in place, and the other three are exchanged counter clockwise: r U r2 U r' U2 r U r U'.

For reversing corners "sidelights" (orientation) flipping two edges - R U' R' U' F' U2 F R' F R F'. I have a general rule of taking something (from the first two levels) out of place one way, and putting it back a different way. If that something is a corner and a middle level edge they often stay together during the alg (sune does that). I like this one because it separates that corner and edge and then reunites them.

Swapping two corners "all up" flipping two adjacent edges. R2 B2 L' B' L B2 R' B R'.

I also do these backwards, and the mirror image versions.

I have 2 favorites. I'll try and fingertrick them as best I can, so you can really feel how I feel them. Underlines mean a left index trigger, and an italic means a right thumb push.

I'll let you try them yourself and see what cases they are

1. M2 U M2 U2 M2 U M2

Liner Notes:

Step 1. With your left hand, hold the FLD and BLD corners with your thumb and index finger. The left hand should be mostly beneath the cube. With your right hand, hold the FR and FRD edge/corner with your thumb, the BR edge with your middle finger, and the BRD corner with your ring finger.

Step 2. With your left hand ring finger and middle finger, pull the M2 -- ring finger first, then middle. For the U moves, trigger with the right index finger.

2. R U' U' r2 u' U' R' U r u R2 U' R' U'

The last one is really great, and really fast.

M2 U M2 U2 M2 U M2 is one of my favs too, Quinn, but I trigger it completely differently.
I do it like this triggering the U moves the same way you do.
(r2 R2 U)(r2 R2 U2)(r2 R2 U)(r2 R2)

The second is a good old Sune done lefthanded on its side. I have a video somewhere of me doing this in 0.7 sec. Just as fast as Lars does the original.
Do both the U' with your left index finger
z (U') (R' U R') (U') (R2 U)

The Kite (as some people call it) because of that first trigger. Start with your right hand gripped upside down and use your left index for the U'.

That should work now.

David, I did find that alg on my own, and then found Bob's awesome fingertricks for it.

Btw, awesome applet! That made finding the problem really easy!

My favourite even permutation is
/0,3/-3,-3/3,0/
It is versatile -- I even use it on the 2x2x2. And I'm starting to wonder if it might be useful for the 3x3x3 too. Will need a new method, though.

My favourite odd permutation is
/3,0/3,0/-2,0/-2,0/4,0/-4,0/-2,0/5,0/-3,0/
which is fast (for what it does), "2-generator", and it is often needed.

I am not fond of trifle, but I try to be mature about it.

Have standard grip at the dot, do D' with the right thumb and D with left ring finger. Works for the Domino

Also:
(l2' U') . (r2 U') (r2' U') (r2 U') (r2' U') (R2 U')
At the dot regrip with right hand so the thumb is on D.

Cool. Before that one I used r2 U2 r2 U r2 U2 r2 U' and later on I played with (R' L' D2 R L U)*2 which swaps corners instead of swapping edges. I know that they are both pretty easy to find, but nice nonetheless.

Hey David, are you sure that alg is correct? The r2 U2 one.

Pembo, its not the same algorithm, its for the same case.

Yes Quinn it is the right one. (?) I do it with the cube out of sight and the result is correct.

Hi Pembo,

That's the same as what I wrote, but in a different notation.
I use the same notation for both the 3x3x3 and 4x4x4, where the lower case letters like "r" means turn the slice (next to "R") alone. The notation which has "r" mean turn 2 layers at once is for "finger tricks" and is used by people who don't use a lot slice moves like I do.

The reason I say it's for finger tricks is because turning R and the middle slice together is really just turning "L" in terms of what the cube alone is doing. In addition, I don't have to write two letters to mean turn one layer.
