Happy Halloween !
Today, we are happy to announce our new puzzle, Okamoto & Grégoire Lattice Cube, which will be mass-produced and bring out to the market about 2 months.
The Lattice Cube is co-designed by Katsuhiko Okamoto & Grégoire Pfennig. Originally designed by Okamoto san, and drawings by Grégoire.
The challenge is to scramble the cube and then restore each faces to their original colours. The cube turns smooth, and fun to play.
We shall have 6 colors and 4 colors stickers versions, in black, white and blue bodies.
Patent Number : 20134003036x.x

We are currently talking to our worldwide business partners about the pre-wholesales orders. If anyone in the puzzles business and interested to be our oversea partners, feel free to contact me at calvinfan@hknowstore.com .
We would like most of our partners made their pre-wholesales orders and have the cubes in stock in advance. Then, we shall set a lucky date to make the officially release to the market.

Wow! Another great puzzle being mass-produced by Calvin! What's next? I think it will be the master tetrahedron (master Skewb as a tetrahedron).

wow nice however this is not a master dino cube because you will not be able to scramble it if you just turn the little tips aka first layes so to scramble you need to turn the 2nd layer so you cannot scramble like a dino cube

Just to clear up something, it doesn't shapeshift, it just changes shape during the solve (like a regular non-spherical puzzle)

Very nice! The lattice cube is a fun solve and it's small enough to count moves and tries to solve it with very few moves. I know the puzzle is still a prototype but do the three triangles on a tip bind when you try to turn just the tip? Usually when pieces meet like that with only a foot holding them in they tend to bind instead of turn.

It's really nice to know there will be another 8-axis puzzle in the market. I really like Rex cube & Master Skewb. So soon enough I'll obtain another one !

Will this come in the standard color scheme, or the one in the picture? Just curious.

Yes, why is it stickered by the corners and why is it stickered as if it had 2x2x2 cuts

I don't see any 2x2x2 cuts, am I missing something?

I believe he was asking why it was stickered like a 4-color dino

Yes. Normally the Lattice Cube is stickered differently.
TheCubingKyle wrote:

Actually I was asking why the stickers were split down the middle (as if the puzzle could turn like a 2x2).

I wondered about the question too at first, but then I noticed it. I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out. There are infact triangular stickers where there would actually be just one quadratical sticker. I don't think it can do 2x2x2 turns though. I bet it's just done that way for fun because the pieces are moldet in two halves.

I'll definitely buy this incredible puzzle even though this will solve like a mosaic cube. :scrambled:

I fell compelled to defend Mintvxq.
He didn't write how to solve it. Only what it is like. And that this puzzle and the mentioned one are essentially the same is not much less obvious as saying a key chain 3x3x3 solves like a normal 3x3x3.
Even the idea that solving a rainbow cube is much like a Dino cube would take a layman longer than figuring this.

alaskajoe you're right. I just don't understand why he is so upset.
Please do not be so serious about my comment. It's just a comment. I would say it solves like Mosaic cube, so what?

As bmenrigh said already "it is a fun solve".
Solving an "easy" puzzle can be fun too, right? :)

I'm not "so upset", but this is a community that for the most part values the challenge and intrigue of a new puzzle, no? I feel it's in the preference of a large part of the community to go into a puzzle with no spoilers, that's all. I wasn't the one making a fuss about it, nor was I trying to be insulting or impolite, nor was I aggressive. But possibly making the text white and adding a spoiler tag so it can remain mystery for those who want a mystery sounded reasonable.

It's natural in the discussion of any puzzle to talk about related puzzles. They are both cubic vertex-turning puzzles with two cut depths. The connection is fairly obvious, honestly. Besides that, this is not a new puzzle. It's been around since 2003. Though I don't consider it a spoiler myself, I think spoilers should be ok after 10 years. Further, it's a really simple puzzle solving wise. Even without spoilers, any cuber should be able to solve it in about 10 minutes.

Ah, I do see those 2x2x2 cuts now. Very intriguing, especially since the upper photographs didn't have them at all. I demand answers Calvin!

The top images in Calvin's post are pictures from Okamoto and posted in the museum at http://www.twistypuzzles.com/cgi-bin/puzzle.cgi?pkey=1350.

If you look closely at Calvin's prototype you can see seams in the plastic. It looks like producing the pieces as one whole piece rather than in two halves was easier / less expensive. Unless the two halves fit together extraordinarily well there will be a ridge between the two pieces big enough to affect the sticker over the ridge.

It looks like Calvin's work-around for the stickers over the piece seams is to split the sticker into two halves too.

Personally, I think it looks good. The inner stickers match the look of the outer tip stickers.

I think in its solved state it will have a certain uniformity that will be very attractive. But when scrambled wouldn't it look kind of.. not done?

Either way it will be a beautiful new addition to the family!

My colleague suggested to cut the inner square stickers into half as the mold cutting.
But, I would like to stick to the original sticker design and in Japanese color scheme. Lattice cube with new stickers as below.

Yes, I definitely prefer this version too. Although I would love to see one that could actually do the 2x2 turns too :D

I also agree that this is the best way to do it. I personally prefer the Japanese (AKA original 1980s) color scheme.

Wonderful Calvin :)

When this starts appearing for sale, can you then please leave the cube unstickered or give us that option? That way we can pick for ourselves which colors go where, because if it were stickered with the Japanese scheme I (and with me a number of others I am sure) would really want it restickered to the for me standard white opposite yellow scheme :)

Yep, I would definitely prefer a choice of the 'other' standard colour scheme too :)
