Hi this is my newly finished puzzle modified from a 7x7, only seen a 3x5x7 on shapeways so this hand mod might be a first? But if not I'm sure someone will be able to tell me, anyway I hope you like it.

Hi Ian

Great mod! :D The finish look fantastic and I'm glad you posted pics from along the way.

Hunter Palshook made the first handmodded one, I believe. I bought it from him and made a quick video of it.

Oh well not the first just a completely different looking puzzle, I didn't really think about cutting the sides down to get the different lengths, but I really like the look of the thin central pieces, just watched the video did you find that it has become smoother to turn after breaking in?

Nice puzzle. I find this puzzle to use the the olzing and the non olzing approach. Why is that?

Its because I only cut down the white and yellow faces creating that effect on those sides only

Yes, sort of. What I mean is that initially one of the sides was quite stiff. Hunter was aware of this. I doused it in lube as much as I could, and I've found now that it turns really nicely. I just gave it a twist and it was a bit of a struggle to see which was the stiff side. So now it really turns well. It's a nice puzzle. 8-)

Wow, absolutely beautiful mod. I yearn to touch it! How long did this mod take? Are these stickers hand cut?

Great mod!
The finishing is absolutely beautiful.
Your other mods are great too, and I like your YouTube channel.

Stunning mod! I have the Shapeways version which is a wonderful puzzle but it's enormous size is prohibitive. So your version from a normal cube will be much more pleasant to play with!

Traiphum's 5x7x9 is the equivalent made from a 9x9 - it is my favourite cuboid of all time!

Hi Ian,

I accidentally stumbled across your video the other day and thought it was brilliant, You are showing me skills that can be applied to most mods, my question is at some point between the final sanding of the puzzle and that beautiful black glossy finish, the cube somehow looks straighter. Is this just because of the uniform black colour covering the whole thing?

Did you make a video of the finishing and stickering? it is still something I have never seen done so I dont know how you got that beautiful black textured finish and those stickers look excellent...olivers? or hand cut?

you from the Liverpool area?

just adjusting the tensions made it all appear straighter ( I had a while between finishing the build and spraying to sort it out) . I haven't done a video of the spraying process I use gloss black from Halfords and I give the pieces about 10 light coats ( it's not great to film as the paint seems to get everywhere and I don't want it in my camera) I didn't film the stickering of this puzzle ( they are hand cut from vinyl sheets from cubesmith) but I have a video on my channel about cutting custom stickers.
Glad you enjoyed it and yeah I am from Liverpool

I have never modded a cube before but yours and Tony Fishers vids are really inspiring.

I sound a bit bias mentioning only British modders haha.

it's worth having a go there are loads of simple mods to start with and what's the worst that can happen, is was going to start with a half truncated 3x3, but ended up doing a 2x2 ghost cube, and the most satisfying thing is solving the puzzle you built yourself .

yeah I know what you mean the 3x3 truncated didn't really interest me either that why I didn't bother, you don't need a dremel for the 5x5x3, did mine mainly by hand it would just increase the time you need to sand for, but it's only a small puzzle so dosnt really take much, if you give it a go PM me if you need any advice

Just how messy is this? Is it possible to keep it contained in a small area? I live in an apartment but I want to give this sort of thing a go, just don't know if it's possible to do it here

It's not to bad I work on a desk that is about 3x2ft, the only time I need more space is when spray painting which I do outside or I'll use a friend's garage
