Ok! Thank you all for the opinions.

So, what you guys think of this selection? I'm getting only 6 or 7.

- Quartet
- H&H
- Vortex
- Equa
- Marble
- Rattle
- Donuts or Coaster or Baroq

Is there anything obviously missing or redundant? What changes would you make to the list?
The Enigma does not appeal much to me in the aesthetics.

Thank you,
Paulo

** original post **

Hello guys!
Its been a long time since I last posted here...

I came here today to ask you what you think are the 6 (six) best Hanayama cast puzzles to get.

Please consider difficulty (I would prefer the more difficult ones), but also important is the puzzle aesthetics, build quality and how "fun" it is to play with.
Please tell me your thoughts!

I plan to get 6 of them in one purchase (maybe tomorrow), since they will be a little expensive for me including shipping to Brazil.

Also, if you know of a good and reliable website to get them, with good price, please let me know.

Thanks very much,
Paulo

Previously discussed in this thread:
http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=22760

though there are a few new ones out now. I stand by what I recommended earlier, however.
Maybe add the O'Gear.

I have reviewed over 30 of them (with another 4 or 5 to come) on my blog here:
http://www.puzzlemad.co.uk/search/label/Hanayama

All are well made (maybe with the exception of the Cast Nutcase) and all have aspects that make them worth getting. The best are not always the very hard ones - everyone agrees that the Cast Quartet is very by hard and also looks beautiful but it is actually not particularly fun to do because it is so tough and very hard to keep track of your moves. Equally the Cast Marble and Cast Donuts are not particularly tough but many find them amongst the most fun because they again look great but have very unusual movements.

My personal favourites in order are:
  1. Cast enigma
  2. Cast marble
  3. Cast donuts
  4. Cast equa
  5. Cast radix
  6. Cast chain

Hope this helps.

I am not really into those sort of puzzles but the horse shoes connected by the chain one pretty much started my fascination with "impossible" objects that lead to my interest in the cube. Although I kind of understand I still find it unbelievable that the ring is removable just as I found it unbelievable that a Rubik's Cube doesn't fall apart..., until one did and I saw the mechanism.

Yes the horseshoes is one of my favorites too, I can solve it, but I dont understand how it works, it seems impossible.
My other favorites : Rattle - Loop - Devil - Elk - Flag - Hook - Donuts
Unsolved : Vortex - Equa - Radix & Enigma.....

Enigma is my favorite.
For five others, well you can't go wrong if the box says "Oskar VanDeventer" on it somewhere.

The way I kind of convinced myself was like this- The horse shoes are joined by a short piece of chain. If the whole thing was a chain then the puzzle would be very easy and pointless. If on the other hand there was no chain then the puzzle would clearly be impossible. So by introducing a small amount of chain makes it just possible.

No Cast puzzle order would be complete without the Marble. And although it isn't very difficult I still think the Loop is one of the most elegant puzzles out there.

I like the easier ones: Cast Flag, Marble, and Harmony. The solutions for those are pretty nice, and they make great fiddle-things. None of them took long to solve, though for some reason I can no longer assemble my marble...Be warned that the Quartet is very difficult.

Vortex, quartet & Equa are very difficult, are you a good puzzler with lots of patience?
H&H, Marble & Rattle are nice puzzles!
Difficult choice, only 6 or 7? mmmm I am sure you will buy more.
I have them all.

I'm not sure I'd put Quartet in the list. It is almost impossible to solve by anyone except by luck. Returning it to the beginning is similarly impossible. Equally the vortex is VERY tough and consequentl may not be as enjoyable as you think. If you do want a really tough one then make it the Enigma.

Enigma and Radix, just get them! ;-)

There are many more, I also like the Dolce, the Loop, the Flag, the Harmony and H&H.
Hanayama always makes quality take apart/put together puzzles that consist of two,
three, four or five pieces.

:)

Ok guys, thanks for your suggestions!

Does anyone know of any store selling those puzzles who offer free international shipping?
Like those nice Chinese stores like DX, etc?

They are heavy and shipping to Brazil becomes really expensive.

Regards,
Peccin
