Would it be possible to free up the circles on a crazy 4x4x4 type 3 and glue on extensions to make a cross 4x4x4? If so, one could make the center stickers Pochmann style for it to be a true cross cube. Also, has anyone already made this?

I don't see why not. I wonder if you could have the first 4x4x1 face as well as a second layer on top of that with a rotatable 2x2x1 face. The centers would then be orientable and make for a pretty cool looking puzzle. :D

It would be difficult to do because the circle pieces are connected directly to the 2x2 core. You'd need some way to disconnect them while keeping them there.

I guess if the pieces are attached to the core, then the first puzzle that comes to mind is a babyface 4x4x4, which would also be very fun to solve. And a question, why is that particular type of puzzle called babyface?

There have been a lot of discussions about possibly making other puzzles from this puzzle.. for example a double circle 444 from the 1 and 2 versioins or the 3 version. The core is a 222 that is seen on the outside as the inner 444centres. It's fixed. There's not much you can do with it in that way.

You could bandage the 444 Circle puzzles with B4bandaging :) , but we haven't released fully what that `is` yet, so you might want to watch the Crazy2face and CrazyB4cube threads in a few weeks.

The babyfaces are named that way due to their flat, smaller `baby` status.
