Why 3072?

Any predictions when the number will hit 10000?

Wow- just 72 to go until a big round-number milestone!

I think it is too far away to make any accurate prediction. I wonder how many active members we have?

Umm I would take a wild shot and say 2000 of them do not post, from what I can see from the authors of posts .

I was looking a few weeks ago and I saw a lot of accounts that have been around for five years and have never posted. I don't know what to define as active though.

A quick perusal of the members page shows:

1126 members have made more than 9 posts
1682 members have made more than 1 post
1922 members have posted

I'd be interested in additional stats like users with more than 10 posts in the last 12 months and such but I don't want to abuse the forum with a script.

I would also count the 3267000013 (prime number!) people who are just browsing the forum.
I mean, the forum is accessible very easily by a simple google search, and it would be interesting
to know the site's hits.

If you plot the amount of activity per user (someone should try this), the result is most likely a Zipf curve which shows as a straight line in a log-log diagram, and still nobody understands why! :?

Wait, wouldn't the next nice round number be 4096 rather than 3072?

Binary jokes aside, another forum I frequent recently passed the 10000 member mark, but only had 125 members with 1000 posts or more at the time. Its amazing how many people will join a forum that is visible to the public, yet never post. No surprised so many forum administrators auto-purge 0-post accounts on a regular basis.

Great analysis, Gus, you have far too much time on your hands!

I wonder if the slight curvature is an effect of accumulation of members and posts over time, rather than a snapshot of activity frequency in a short period. Either way, amazing that the trend is so smooth.

Wow, it turns out my wild guess of 2000 inactive members was somewhat accurate!

Interesting analysis!

This is the graph of the top 500 members:

This only took me about 15 minutes to do. If you go to the Members section and scroll to the bottom, you can sort them in descending order of posts. Then I copy-pasted the data into Excel, deleted the extraneous columns, tidied up the data and created the graph. Seemples.

There is a definite curve to this one. When you get below 1000 posts, the difference between the number of posts between each rank becomes quite small and fairly constant.
