Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

As suggested by many, I decided to start Twistypedia. It is a wiki with terminology for twisty-puzzles specialists. It is meant as condensation of conclusions from many different threads at the Twisty Puzzles Forum. Feel free to contribute. My proposal is to keep any terminology discussions at the Twisty Puzzles Forum.

Enjoy!

Oskar

Thank you, Oskar! Very useful! It is a nice composition of many terms you might want to look up when reading forum posts.

Thanks Oskar, that must have taken an incredible amount of time to set up. Well done!

A question regarding scope... Are solving and math related terms and properties such as "orbit", "permutation", "orientation", etc. within scope?

This doesn't seem to fit the spirit of a wiki. You've limited it to nothing more than simple definitions. I know it's early, but I don't see there being anything that couldn't be offered by a stickied post on the "general puzzle topics" board. Why limit it? I'm sure if you widened the scope to all aspects of twisty puzzles, then the community would provide tons of content and make something truly great.

Yes, as long as they are described in terms of twisty puzzles.

A wiki is community-driven. So far the TP community has only contributed some simple definitions. I agree that some more encyclopedic descriptions would be nice. I hope that the TP community will be contributing those. You understand that this is an invitation :-)

Thanks for the invitation Oskar, I just edited "Deep Cut" to be a bit more precise, and point it to the proper discussion thread here.

What a great resource! I should see if Sandy could put some sort of link to it, or somehow keep it up front for newcomers who may feel overwhelmed by some of the discussions and terminology.

Ideally (and this would require work on Sandy's part) anytime a word that is defined in the Twistypedia is posted, it will automatically link to the definition in the Twistypedia.

I see this for ad words a lot, so I'm sure there are scripts that could do this.

What an awesome resource for info! Well done!
Do you think that you could add the term "grip" or "grip pattern" to the site? It was described in this post.

It's a wiki so it's up to us to add these things :D

Some of the things I'd like to see added (read: I'll add them eventually if somebody else doesn't beat me to it):

* Piece Permutation
* Piece Orientation
* Grip / Grip pattern
* Orbit
* Parity
* Piece symmetry
* Global Orientation
...etc...

There are a lot of terms that we used when talking about the abstract behavior of a twisty puzzle both in the context of solving and in the context of designing and those terms need to be defined somewhere. Right now the terms mostly live in our collective heads and in many cases we don't even have the same definitions for a given term.

Maybe adding "babyface" could be beneficial. That's my two units of currency to be added.
