Interesting, they look very close to final production. It's clever how Witeden always manages to design the cubes so that pieces can be exchanged to make w whole family of cubes - unless you want to collect them all, of course!

I just saw these on youtube, they look great. Great to see more of Oskar's work getting mass produced. I was just wondering a couple of weeks ago if WitEden were due to bring out a new family of puzzles soon :)

Fingers crossed the build quality is better than the camouflage series, but the puzzles look great so far!

I agree! hey look very interesting but a brief glimpse of these prototypes reveals that the pieces seem to be uncapped.

I hope that as they go toward production they will cap pieces to ensure a better experience.

All I can say is: finally! God bless Oskar & WitEden, and put me down for a 3x3x3 and a 4x4x4!

Actually, make that TWO 3x3x3s. :-)

This is awesome! The Mixup cube is such a great spin on the all-time classic. I'm surprised it hasn't been mass-produced sooner.

Oskar has 3 versions of his Shapeway's Mixup Cube. This being injection molded I'm sure its not identical to any of Oskar's 3 versions but does anyone know which version is closest to the mechanism used here?

Thanks,
Carl

YES finally! I need this puzzle yesterday.
Edit: I wonder if the edges on the 4x4 version could be split in half like this to allow more 4x4 moves after a mixup move.

Yes, I had the same Idea for a cube a little while ago.
One thing you can do is buy 3 4x4x4 mixup cubes and put centers in the place of the edges and build them up with apoxy.
Maybe it is also possible to just buy 1 4x4x4 mixup cube and saw the edges into two pieces and then fill them up again.
Depending on the price of the puzzle I will try the last method ^^

It is indeed a fourth design. YuChun (WitYou) You of WitEden has done a great job. His design is a combination of spherical and cylindrical. There are 24 hidden floating pieces (actually 48, each is split in half) between the center/edge pieces. At first, I was skeptical about this design, as the floating pieces do not contain the center/edge pieces. However, the design proves to work perfectly, and the floating pieces provide good support. YuChun's implementation improves my prototype, as his impedes rotation of the center/edge pieces, a movement that I could not manage to fully block because of the flexibility of the 3D-printed nylon. I also like the clever solution how pieces are composed of sub-pieces, maximizing the number of different possible assemblies. This has been a great project.

Agreed with all of the above, this is great news!
Finally, after many decades, the 3x3x3 Mixup cube
would be available to all!

NICE!!! Thanks for the info. May I suggest a YouTube video comparing Shapeways Version 3 and WitEden Version 4? I have a hard time seeing how you could rotate the center/edge pieces even on your version 3. If possible I assume it requires significant force. Maybe you could make it an assembly video too as I'd like to see how the "floating pieces" compare with your version 3 as well.

Thanks,
Carl

Oskar: Are these your images?
If yes: Can you reshoot them? Images with puzzles obscuring each other are almost as bad as blurry images.

When will be the puzzles available?

I think the last images show the mass produced puzzles.

Note that the result may be an easier puzzle. The current design is implicitly like your idea, but bandaged. Also, y would no longer have the notion of "edge edges" ;-) and the split parts could land on different parts of the face, their position would be no longer fixed to a specific edge.

This said, they would be different puzzles, with different challenges - I am not saying that your idea should not be done - on the contrary, I would love to see it.

I have been hoping that they would make versions of their Mixup Plus cubes (3X3X4, 3X4X4, & 4x4x4) with split edges like this. Maybe they will some day...

I think that you can actually saw these pieces in half. You must be very precise and careful, then sand the pieces, then maybe fill with epoxy. Should work…

Actually it looks like the edges may already be split like how a lot of puzzles are these days. If that's the case, you'd only need to take them apart and sand down the pegs that hold them together and fill them.

I preordered the whole set. I've never done that before.

Unfortunately, some of the issues that TwistyPuzzles members have previously encountered are still present on the WitEden website:

There is still no "City" field in the address. Theoretically in Canada a street address and a postal code is sufficient. In any case, I added my city to the end of my street address.

The PayPal transaction was marked "failed" on the return screen and my order is marked "unpaid" when it was in fact processed by PayPal. ETA: I send a message and the order is now marked "paid".

In any case, I am looking forward to these puzzles. I really like the Mixup Plus series and it will be nice to have their non-Plus eqivalents.

I was also expecting they would cost the same as the camouflage cubes. They used better plastic und caps, that must be the reason

You can fill in the address bar on your complete address, including country, province, city, street address ,postal code, etc

The postal code is necessary !

when you payment via paypal,my website can't automatically update to "paid",I also don't know why ,but sometimes can automatically ;
so I must update it manually

black color have in stock

As WitEden said, after you pay with PayPal the WitEden shop status shows "failed" but within a short while it is updated.

All the layers are capped and they turn reasonably well out of the box. There is a bit of spring noise, so I will be addressing that with some lubricant on the springs. I will post an unboxing and impressions video in the next day or so.

For the money challenged collector, is it safe to say that if you buy the mixup 4x4x4 plus you technically have all the others since they are a subset?

Yes, if you don't split the layers you can solve the 4x4x4 as a 3x3x3. They are all made on the 4x4x4 mechanism. The edges and centres determine how much of it is bandaged.

I will address this and a couple of other likely questions in my unboxing and first impressions video and will update this thread when I post it.

One thing concerning me is the center piece on the 3x3 Mixup Cube. It looks slightly raised in comparison to the rest of the face. Would that cause problems during turning? And @Pete, do your centers have a slight raise to them?

It's a complex mechanism. The centres are flat and held on with two blade-like anchor posts:

If the centre is just casually pressed on it sticks out:

On the puzzles I received, some of the centres were sticking out a bit - perhaps it is a factory thing. I don't mind because they have to be removed to lubricate the springs and set the tension. Pressed down firmly we get:

The centre still sticks out a bit when pressed down firmly:

It's not exactly sticking out - it is more like a tilt due to slack in the mechanism. Not objectionable at all. But let me see if I can mix it up... yup:
