This weekend I obtained a new puzzle from Wil Strijbos, a puzzle friend from the Netherlands.
For the time being we call it a “Cylinder puzzle” because we don’t know its real name (perhaps some friends from China can help us with that, see package details with descriptions below).

It is a puzzle consisting of 4 layers with each 8 segments in 4 sets of 2 colours.
Apparently it is made or distributed by the company Auldey and only for sale in China.

Two halves of the puzzle can move with respect to each other, allowing the segments to become mixed.
This is similar to the Diogenes puzzle which was invented by Hubert Petutschnig and produced by Pet Toys and which has 3 layers with each 10 segments.

Similar puzzles were made by Anthony Greenhill (more or less a remake of the Diogenes, also with 3 layers of 10 segments) and by Tony Fisher (the so-called Sliding Puck puzzle made from 3 puck puzzles of 12 segments).

However, in addition to the movement of sliding the 2 halves, this new puzzle also allows the 2 halves to be rotated with respect to each other.

The combination of sliding and rotating allows the puzzle to obtain special shapes due to the curved segments at the end (see details on the packaging below).
The movement of the puzzle is not very smooth, possibly due to the complicated mechanism, but it is a very nice and unique puzzle.

Geert

Looks great!
I love hearing about unexpected puzzles like these!
If anyone knows a site where I can buy one or if one of the Chinese members would be willing to help I would love to buy one of these puzzles!

Pity it's got same coloured columns adjacent to each other, this always decreases the difficulty :( .

There were two sellers mentioned on this site. The one I chose doesn't have them in stock anymore.

The other seller offers the puzzle for $ 10.80 (+ shipping costs).
You find the seller on:
www.lugbuy.com
categorie Toys ande hobbies, Rubik's cube page 7.

I have no experience with this seller. I ordered my puzzle 3 days ago.
They do accept paypal.

This puzzle is made in China in 2012, as a accessory product of Chinese animation called “Q-Borg”. Here is the webpage of it: http://www.auldeyqb.com/

And there is a mod of this puzzle by me

Has anyone else ordered from lugbuy? if so have you received your puzzle or confirmation of shipping?

I ordered on the 29th of April but it is still in "arranging", not posted yet. I also noticed that the price of the puzzle has tripled from $10 to $30. I'm beginning to suspect they won't post my order as it was ordered at the cheaper price :(

Does anyone know a reliable seller that has these puzzles in stock?

I ordered from lugbuy on 2013-04-29, I paid $10.80 for the puzzle itself. I got the puzzle on 2013-05-21, which I think is fairly reasonable. The puzzle is a little bit stiff, but works (I plan to lubricate it one of these days).

By the way, I only went back to the account just now, so I don't know when it changed from Pending to Arranging or to Shipped (which is the current status). Most probably the status changed on 2013-05-04, because there are pictures that were added to the order page on that day. The pictures are at the bottom of the order details page and they show the contents of the package, the package being weighted and a close-up of the label. Each picture has a small paper with the order id hand-written. I would say that they are very thorough.

Thanks to Adeleuw for the link.

To Juanan: yes, it is possible to separate two rows of the same color.

Skarabajo.

Thanks Skarabajo, good to know someone who ordered at the same time as me has received their puzzle (although annoying too!!)

They requested address confirmation from me on the 5th, which I confirmed on the same day but maybe this slipped by without them noticing - I have emailed them about it, I just hope they honor the original purchase price.

My question still stands - is anywhere else selling this puzzle? Or if anyone is willing to sell one please let me know.

Thanks

EDIT: Lugbuy have now contacted me and said that as it takes up to 35 days for delivery they are cancelling my order and refunding me but that I can re-order if I want - Wow, thanks guys, I can re-order a month later and pay more than my original order!

Luckily Calvin at hknowstore has restocked these for just $16 with free delivery - guess where i'll be ordering!
