Well I wasn't trying to break any records here I've seen Tonys 24cm cube, but I made this one just for fun with a 4x4x4 at the core.
First I bandaged by capping a 4x4x4 into a 2x2x2 with the intention of leaving it this way, but later decided to make 8 larger cubies for it, and each one the size of a 7x7x7 seemed like a manageable size.
I used 8 x A4 sheets of 1mm plastic sheet to make it, which is quite a bit considering the size of the overall finished puzzle. (the first picture just shows it all cut up and layed out).

Excellent mod! Looks very professional. I've always imagined making a massive 2x2, like 2 meters. It seems like it wouldn't be very difficult given the fact that it is just an extension, rather than a larger scale mechanism as seen in big 3x3's.

None of my big 3x3x3s have "larger scale mechanisms". They can all be done with extensions.

Maybe, but an 8x8x8 is approximately 10X the price of the 4x4x4 I used
besides, I could have built bigger here with the 4x4x4 I used, but the size I went for was chosen based on how comfortably I could hold and use the puzzle.

Very nice work... I'd love to see a video of it in action.
