Hi guys,

I find myself regularly going back to my 4x4 to practice algorithms (especially the even order parity algorithms) and I'm rather fed up with my cube! It's a Rubik brand 4x4 and it catches and clicks and partially pops and even after a decent lube it's stiff as hell!

I have absolutely no intention of ever speed cubing and all the discussions on the net of "what 4x4" are aimed at teenage speedcubers! Their discussions seem to go back and forth and get rather firey! Hopefully that wont happen here!

So can anyone advice me which brand 4x4 I should try to get a nice smooth and non-catchy/popping experience. Some of these cubes go up to $45! Surely it's not necessary to spend that much to get a nice cube?

The Lanlan 4x4 is a very nice 4x4 for someone who just wants an upgrade from a Rubik's. Unfortunately, they do have a tendency to break.

If you have no intention of speed-solving, I must absolutely recommend the Eastsheen. Right out of the box with no lube, they are amazingly smooth. And you can get them with super stickers too.

Sorry, but if you want a good 4x4, you have to ask a speedcuber :/
Eastsheen 4x4: Smooth, but locky and cheap. Hard to fix pops.
Meffert's, Lanlan etc 4x4s: Ball core mechanism like the Rubik's brand (need to properly align). "Average" cubes with good quality.
X-cube 4x4: Very expensive and exploding now and then, but a good cube.
Dayan 4x4: Can be very smooth after lubrication, minor pops. One of the best 4x4s.
There is another well-known 4x4 which is really good but partly using V-cube design.

For 4x4 cube, I think east sheen is good, if you're not going to speed cubing.

Actually I want to recommend another brand of 4x4 cube. However this brand is recognized as ko so can't shown in forum.

I have my own line of modded 4x4 and above puzzles, unfortunately they are a ko brand

Just my opinion like many other's here. I a'm not a speedcuber but I have many diffrent 4x4's. I like the eastsheen, MF8+DaYan, and XB's 4x4.these 3 do not have the ball core. there are more but like other's have said we can not talk about the KO's. But for the price the eastsheen will be the best to get started on.
