Great News

I've noticed that this 20% discount does not affect mark-ups so the shop owners get the mark-up they specified. This automatically allows the following trick: shop owner creates a model with $1 cost and $1000 mark-up. His partner buys it and pays only $800 due to the discount, the seller getting his $1000 mark-up. Thus the couple gets $200 profit for nothing as a gift from Shapeways. What do you guys think about it?

In the past the discount codes only subtracted from the print cost and not the markup. So a $100 item with $100 of markup (in the shop for $200) would cost $180 after discount.

Of course this exposes the markup to buyers.

If Shapeways has made a mistake and instead is setting the price to $160 while still paying the designer the full markup, please don't abuse it. In the end they'd probably end up canceling a bunch of orders, possibly all of them. In addition to making a ton of work for Shapeways, it would probably ruin the discount for many others and possibly make Shapeways never offer a discount again.

In the past there was one instance where Shapeways gave 10% off the full price but they've (wisely) stopped doing that. In that case it would have indeed been possible to conduct such an arbitrage but if it was too exorbitant they would have canceled the order.
