After recent discussions this puzzle won't surprise many people. Plus of course those following me on twitter got a sneak preview earlier. The Petaminx was the perfect puzzle to take my "Open" series one stage further. It has plenty of space around the core and unlike the Gigaminx if you sticker the inside there are no issues with the them being on areas that go back inside to get pushed off. Despite some negative comments about my other open puzzles ( V-Dome, 7x7x7 Open Bandage, Open Gigaminx)I have remained very enthusiastic about this concept. I am not saying the others were fantastic but puzzle making is often about developing ideas which ultimately leads to something better. My advice to any young puzzle maker starting today is to make the puzzles that YOU want to and ignore any criticisms. Solving my puzzle is no different to solving a regular Petaminx which has been bandaged to only allow movement on three adjacent sides (around one corner). However having this type of stickering means you have to keep checking inside and out which will certainly add to the frustration. The internal stickers (on movable parts) correspond to the external middle edges and corners. For this reason I chose not to sticker these areas externally. If I had you could solve the puzzle without ever looking inside which defeats the whole point of it. If you ignore the outside totally and just concentrate on the inside then the puzzle is equivalent to my Triamese Void Pentagons Puzzle or a bandaged Megaminx. Movement is ok but it's a bit loose despite the tightening the screws. Messing around with the structure and tensions of such a complex puzzle is always likely to have some bad affect. For the inside I cut the stickers by hand and used the high quality fluorescent Meffert style textured material on six of the "faces".I figured it might be a little dark inside so they work well. I used regular material for the others. I will upload a a construction video later. Last thoughts. I am so tempted to fully sticker the outside since I believe it looks kind of wrong. Doing so would actually spoil the puzzle so I will resist. Video Web Page (More photos & information) Please allow below image to fully load, then it will move smoothly (ish). You'll have to check their colors from the interior.
This is awesome!

I shall admit that the open bandage series isn't my favourite set of puzzles, however I really do like this one. Perhaps its due to making the internal area of it part of the puzzle, rather than just showing off the mechanism.

Wow Tony this looks incredible! The inside looks so perfect! Cannot put into words how great this puzzle looks. By far the best custom puzzle of the year in my opinion! Very well done!
Would you mind if I made one?

What about creating 'side stickers' for the open area edges? I think that it would add some interest, if not solving value (it might make the bandaging harder to accomplish, especially if you were to want the pieces to look like they would if you were to just 'open' a petaminx instead of using putty to help with the bandaging as you have) but it would certainly look nice.

I did not really like your series of open puzzles at first, but as you say, this is an idea in development, and this is by far the best one yet. Next: open 11x11x11! <edit> Oops, I meant 17x17x17 </edit>

Very awesome and cool looking. Love the inner stickers. I think though that it would've looked better if the exposed edges were fused without appearing solid, so that you could see the entire mechanism, but that's just me. Doug Roth wrote: It's great! I will ask what I'm sure people are wondering... Why did you choose to not sticker the corners and the 1st layer edges?
-Doug If I might venture a guess, it's so that you have to solve those pieces by using the inside stickers.

-Doug If I might venture a guess, it's so that you have to solve those pieces by using the inside stickers. Thanks, I totally agree but they were a bit awkward. The parts are hollow and some are also very thin. By the time they are cut and filled there isn't much definition left so they looked very untidy. There's no need to guess about why I left some parts unstickered Doug Roth and Modern-Day Warrior, it's all in the first post and video.

May I ask something? How come you didn't fill all the spaces between the pieces? It looks as if you did that near the outside portion of the exposed pieces, but not in between all of the layers completely. I hope that makes sense. Great puzzle. This is exactly what I thought you were going to make after seeing the unboxing of the petaminx's.

This is exactly what I thought you were going to make after seeing the unboxing of the petaminx's. Like I said, some parts are very thin and looked untidy when filled. I wanted to retain the look of the mech as much as possible so had to settle for this. Some of it was also to do with the way the parts were glued and assembled. That will be explained in a future video.

I especially like the GIF. I will see which of the frames suites the puzzle best.

Hey Tony, first of all, this is positively amazing. Now on to my suggestion (feel free to ignore, just throwing an idea around) if you wanted to sticker the corners and edges I think it would look good to put a neutral color stickers on all sides of the empty corners/edges. I think a dark shade of grey or blue would look great. Like I said, just an idea. -HP

Very informative video, and it's always nice to hear your voice for a change. Looks so simple when you do it
