Sorry for double posting, but I was thinking a lot about this puzzle. I realized a couple things. First, this is the ideal transformation of a Gem 2, because in the Gem 2, there are no corners. This make it much easier to transform into a magic octahedron (type). Second, I cannot imagine how you managed to conceal the cross pieces (the 4 pieces directly around every face center). Third, this is possibly my favorite modification of all time.
