As stated in the video I made this because I had a Gigaminx with a broken corner plus I like the way mechanisms look and think it's a shame how they are usually hidden away from sight. I have slightly modified the core on this so you can clearly see the moves on the inside as well.
After making my puzzle I realised Doug Roth had done something similar. He called his "Open Bandage Gigaminx" carrying on the theme I started with my Open Bandage 7x7x7. Before seeing his I had already decided to drop the word "bandage" since I believe "open" is apt enough. His version by the way removes a 2x2x5 block of cubies (dodecahedronies?).
All the parts around the opening are glued together to prevent the puzzle falling apart. This means they can not be mixed up and only three sides of two layers can move. This does however allow enough mixable pieces to make the puzzle interesting.
Unfortunately movement is not great which is partly a reflection of the quality of the factory made Gigaminx it was made from and also the fact that gluing the parts together affects neighbouring pieces.

Yes I was thinking about that. However I think turning will progressively deteriorate the more it is opened up. Ultimately I would like a puzzle where the inside is clearly visible and may even take stickers.

An inside out cube? Now there's an idea! Get on it Tony. I'm sure you'll have it for us in no time.
