The inner 2x2x2 is only solved when the outer shell pieces fit around it. The pieces fit nicely straight out of the box- tight enough to stay in, but loose enough to get out easily! It's based on a mini Eastsheen 2x2x2.
Potential solution spoilers:
The puzzle is made more challenging since the shell pieces have two solutions, and both can also be done inside-out. However, the inner 2x2x2 can only be solved for one of these. The inner 2x2x2 also has some identical pieces, and those are always troublesome.
The piece with the logo is reversible, and flat on the other side, for those who don't like displaying logos.

Oh nice! I love it . And for names hmm; "almost there cube", "(1/2+1/2)x(1/2+1/2)x(1/2+1/2) cube", "half and half cube".

...and protrusions in one corner of the center parts could also poke through holes in the outer plates.

Here's another idea, how about a 4x4 version with 3 'levels'. The first level is the 4x4. The second is assembly pieces that bandage it into a 2x2, and the third level of assembly pieces completes the cube.

Really Good idea for twisty puzzle! I think it won't be so easy as we don't know the original state of the 2x2 cube~

Because you have to peel this "Fruit/Nut" to get to the sweet 2x2x2 Cube I suggest:

Fruit Cube or Nuts Cube

Because a tired Admin thought it looked like a non-twisty puzzle from the initial picture (and didn't read with care). I've moved it back, sorry for any confusion.

This is a great idea! It's nice to see a puzzle of the twisty genre merged with an assembly puzzle. It vaguely reminds me of the 'Groove Cube' by Eitan, except where that was a packing puzzle this is an assembly puzzle.

Personally I think with the (presumably) high level of difficulty this puzzle offers, a 3x3x3 version would be far too difficult to grab the attention of many people. The inner plates could also be further divided in quarters, and various other modifications to up the difficulty, but in this case I think less is more and it is great as it is.

How about 8 different 2x2x2s, with protrusions in different places, which all lock together like lego bricks into one big dovetailed 2x2x2x2x2x2 "supercube" with 6 surface plates only when they are all solved?

That's getting more similar to Child's Play.
I will note that my idea was not based on that- I've been trying to think of a way to combine a burr/assembly puzzle with a twisty puzzle for a while. This is one of two that I figured out. I'll make the other one when I have money
