Hi everybody, it was a long time since I made a puzzle. Now I have spare time, so I built this puzzle. I called it pycubro ("pyraminx cubic brother") because it was built from a pyraminx. The problem is that the pyraminx can't be transformed into a cubic shape, so I made it using an extra piece which complete the cubic shape. I hope you like it, I'm glad with the result. bye! I know the video quality is bad. I hope to have a better camera in the following days. Youtube video: http://youtu.be/-X1XS7RYaAk

It's called the Cubominx. Technically, a Pyraminx cannot be made cubic without introducing additional pieces that would be equivalent to Halpern-Meier Tetrahedron centers or Skewb corners. Making those extra pieces from a Pyraminx core can't really be done without adding extra mechanism, so to circumvent this problem Tony capped up the holes and added gaps between them to prevent collisions. It's similar to what is done in the Flowerminx. But that is a very cool puzzle. I like it a lot. Chandler

Could you explain how I should put the extra pieces in the core to make a cubic pyraminx? thank you!

It's hard to explain, and I'm no expert. But I think the extra pieces needed for it could only be held in by magnets. It would make the puzzle have the same number and types of pieces as a Skewb.

Chino told me in other puzzle forum, that the pyraminx transformed into a cube is the skewb cube. I compared the core and I think I understand the mechanism. Thank you!

Thank you for your comment , I also think the extra piece is cool, it was an accident, because it was the only way I found to make it cube, but the result is cool I didn't truncate the pyraminx, the only thing I did, was to quit the pyraminx's corners. It's too easy to do, you just have to pull it. Bye!!

I am quite sure the Skewb is a name made up from Pyraminx and Cube. Try and say it just after each other. The two puzzles are not identical thouh. They solve differently. To understand the difference better look at the Jinx Pyraminx/ Halpern Meier Tetrahedron and compare that to a Pyraminx. The pyraminx has 6 moving edge pieces and 4 centers that spins in place. The HM tetra has yet another kind of piece that is 3-fold symmetric.

I always thought it had to do with skewed cuts, skew + cube= skewb. I could be wrong. I don't pretend to be Meffert. In any case, this puzzle is really cool! I can't think of many twisty puzzles that have a solved state that includes a piece that has to be removed to move the puzzle. Very interesting puzzle.

The name "Skewb" was coined by Douglas Hofstadter in a column for Scientific American. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkewbThe Skewb was originally called "Pyraminx Cube", actually. So there you go.

I didn't know the origin of the name, it's cool to know it I don't have the puzzles you comment to compare it with the pyraminx, after all I think I understand the mechanism to convert one in other. thank you for comment. bye!

I neither know puzzles wich have an extra piece, but it's true too that I don't know much puzzles. I wish it be the first, it would be nice. thank you for your comment!!
