This is exactly what I did. It made a huge difference in the functionality of the puzzle. I can turn an edge with my thumb, using the same light touch I would use to turn the upper layer on a cube; out of the box it took all my strength and a vice-like grip. No need to disassemble the Helicopter Dodecahedron (and I think it is very difficult anyway).
