I finally received mine and made an unboxing video. I'm *really* happy I got the Petaminx. I'm taking an online course (class), so stickering will be spread out over a week or even two. I'm looking forward to spending some plesant winter evenings solving this massive puzzle.

I got mine today,as you can see I've still got to sticker it and it makes the teraminx look small especially in a tower.

That's weird. Anyway it seems ok now. I have just added a new video so-

Petaminx disassembly
Petaminx unboxing

When disassembling the puzzle I noticed some of the parts are quite thin as you would expect so I would advise caution when taking one apart. I have seen loads of disassembly videos of other puzzles where people violently pull them apart. You may be sorry if you try that with this.

Sad to say you are not the only one.
I received mine yesterday. The box appeared sligthly bashed. When I opened the box everything was inspected and was in tact, looked like the packing etc. did the trick and had protected the puzzle. The puzzle was thoughly inspected and there was no sign of damage. Great.
I proceeded in turning some faces. Was impressed as it turned well.

THEN

When turning another face, the face "exploded" - bits all over. There was no force involved - the centre piece which is screwed to the core had broken - the flat section was totally removed from the vertical section. Something must have happened somewhere, (?? in production/assembly ?? I don't know), this piece is within the puzzle and there was no evidence of any damage to the outside, all surfaces were in pristine condition.

Next job - recovering all the pieces.

Following disapointment and some healing time, I later commenced "fixing and reinforcing" the said piece. This was then followed by finding out how to resemble the one and a half faces that were effected. After 2 hours and a couple of setbacks (the time which could have been spent as part of the stickering process) the puzzle was re-assembled, hopefully for good this time.
Having this happen though, obviously there is the doubt - is there another centre piece, or whatever, just waiting to give me a surprise. My confidence in turning the puzzle is somewhat diminished as you all can possibly imagine. Hopefully with time and use this will disappear.

This is the first time this sort of thing has happened to me - hopefully it will be the last.

Hope all you future Petaminx owners do not experience anything resembling the above.

I scrambled my Petaminx and started to solve it.
I think that I will fix the sharp tips of the little triangles with a tiny drop of superglue.
They are in danger and a few start to peel off - just the tips not the whole stickers.
Everything else is fine.
I'll take my time and do one or two centres per day. Otherwise it is too tedious and a bit boring
The beast is so huge! 1010 grams, a bit more than one gram per external piece.

Has somebody calculated in how many visually different combinations the 950 moving pieces can be arranged? (without super stickers)

EDIT: The superglue fixed my problem with the sharp edge stickers nicely. You have to be careful, because the edge pieces are so small. You could easily glue edge wings as well.

Wow.. you have some courage alright!

My cubes are by far not that big (I have a megaminx, *giggle*), but I do disassemble each one. Thought behind it: if it blows I wanna know how to get it back together. Doing this in a controlled environment makes it easier the second time, SHOULD it come around (and I discovered a partially split core on the 5x5 that way).

But wow... this peta is just.. AWESOME!

Probably although I don't have a link so here goes.

Part classification:
  • 12 centers (define the orientation / color scheme)
  • 20 corners with 3 orientations (there is a twist and parity restriction)
  • 30 edges with 2 orientations (also have a twist and parity restriction)
  • Three different edge-wings, 60 each, no orientation (each with a parity restriction)
  • Twelve face piece types, 60 each with no orientations (each has duplicate colors with 12 groups of 5 which mask the parity restrictions)

((20! / 2) * (3^20 / 3)) * ((30! / 2) * (2^30 / 2)) * (60! / 2)^3 * (60! / (5!^12))^12

Or roughly 3.16 * 10^996 visually distinguishable states / positions / combinations / permutations.

Otherwise known as "a few".

Edit:
And for the insane masochist that puts super stickers on their Petaminx, the calculation would be:
(5^12) * ((20! / 2) * (3^20 / 3)) * ((30! / 2) * (2^30 / 2)) * (60! / 2)^3 * (60! / 2)^12
= 4.76114 * 10^1300

I got mine today and it arrived as a pile of parts. One of the center caps had shattered into three places and is definitely not repairable. I hope MF8 can rectify this. I further hope that I've found all the pieces!

That's a bummer that so many are arriving damaged. :( I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

I just finished solving mine. I figure the total solve time was somewhere between 5-6 hours spread over 2 days. I still have the tensions fairly tight, and I may go in and loosen them a bit, but it still turns very well. Definitely a great puzzle!

The inner layers of mine were tight out of the box, and while they loosened up after some turning, the turning effort would still make it tiring to solve. Just putting silicone oil on the outside of the inner (tightest) layer didn't do much, but when I used the pointy applicator and put it about 1 cm inside the layer (as in the picture), it loosened right up. After this lubrication, the turning of the inner layers is effortless, just like the other layers.

I had the same experience with face turning starminx.
it seems that a spring was too strong compared to the screw. I have glue the screw and get rid off the spring. For now, no other troubles - And my petaminx seems ok

I just did a trial sticker run for one side. It took under 8 mins which means the whole puzzle shouldn't take more than two hours at the most. My advice is don't use the application film, I tried and it was more trouble than it was worth. Simply do it one by one with a suitable craft knife. I will follow this up with a video to show the best way to do it.

4.75 secs per sticker! Wow!
Normal human beings may need a bit longer

@bmenrigh: Thanks for the calculation. "A few" is quite a lot.

Sorry my post may have been misleading. While editing the video I made it 7mins 16 so that averages 4.32 per sticker. Shame I had to reposition a few. Uploading tonight.

I got mine exactly one week ago from Calvin at HKnowStore.com. After I unwrapped it, it just fell apart as three centers broke on the way to my home.

Image

As you all can see on the next picture, the box in which it was packed was slightly dented on two sides because it did not quite fit the (wrapped) puzzle. I assume that on the long way to Germany it got several knocks which caused the centers to break.

Image

After arrival of the broken Petaminx I contacted Calvin (mailed him some more pictures of the puzzles and the box) and asked him what to do now. He instantly replied and told me I could send him the Puzzle back. Moreover, he refunded me the shipping cost and left it to me wheter I wanted a gift coupon from his site or a Paypal-transaction.

Before I could send him back the tracking-ID of the package I dispatched, he sent out a new Petaminx, which I am yet waiting for.

I can confirm, the puzzle is very fragile simply due to it's dimensions. As these Petaminxes have the largest centers I know of any mass-produced puzzle combined with the sheer size of this model, I don't think most puzzle-shops have the right amount of wrapping or lack the appropriate size of packaging carton.

So...yes, I am a very disappointed that I received a broken puzzle. But nonetheless I am completely satisfied with the service I was granted. I'm hoping to receive the puzzle in the next days and will be back with a few pictures.

Stickering tutorial video uploaded here. This method is suitable for most puzzles. As mentioned earlier you can do a full Petaminx in under 90mins. I suspect the speedcubers here can do it much faster.

Hi Telow,

sorry about your bad luck!

This picture shows my box at arrival:
Image
I got mine from hknowstore (Calvin) as well.

There was a lot of loose material and bubble wrapping around my Petaminx. The puzzle was in perfect condition.
My impression at that time was that the packaging was quite OK.
Now, hearing so much about broken centres, I consider myself lucky.

As you can see on the picture (Selbstverzollung!), I had a bit of bad luck too: I had to drive to the customs office (a 60 km journey for me!) and had to pay 19% VAT.

I'm very sorry to see these broken Petaminx. I hope everyone gets the issue resolved quickly. Is this a shipping issue, or a manufacturing issue with the centre piece?

I'm starting to think it's a manufacturing problem with the center pieces. I thought mine was fine when it came. It turned just fine, and I stickered it, scrambled and solved it. Then yesterday I took the center caps off to adjust the tensions, and sure enough, one of the centers was broken. It broke in such a way that it doesn't affect the operation of the puzzle, but I am aware now I do need to be careful with it.

My last Petaminx video for a while was supposed to show you how to remove the caps to adjust the screws. However I think it's more a case of how to remove the caps to check if there is damage. I would strongly advise people to do this. If you have a damaged one that hasn't exploded yet then you should be able to repair it. Depending on the damage you could try running a tiny amount of super glue into any cracks and filling / covering any holes with your favourite filler or plastic sheet. Mine just had a tiny hole in one centre which didn't seem an issue until I read the other reports here.
Anyway, cap removal / cap put back on video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVTF95cKvf8 . It's not pretty BTW but it works.

Thanks to everyone who posted comments on this thread. I am now anxiously awaiting the arrival of my petaminx and will thoroughly inspect it.

Pete, nice unboxing video, I enjoy all of your videos and hope to see more from you.

Tony - your Petaminx series is fantastic. I'm about 40 minutes into the assembly video. Nice trick with the masking tape, I have thought about doing it, but was concerned with leaving adhesive on the puzzle, but this should not be a concern with this type of tape. I enjoy assembling large puzzles and have done so with my teraminx (all 4 of them, 3 mf8 and one C4U) several times. I had planned to do this for the petaminx, but given the cost and some of the rather thin pieces, I'm not sure I would unless I had spare parts. As for assembling a stickered puzzle, such as a teraminx, I find it easier to tell the difference between some of the smaller pieces if they have stickers on them. Sometimes I'll reassemble it is a scrambled state, making sure the corners and main center edges are placed and oriented correctly to make sure the puzzle is solvable.

For anyone finding a center piece with an unwanted hole, it may be wise to insist on at least a replacement piece, but heed Tony's warning about attempting to remove the center piece. If you decide to do this, at the very least, you may want to follow this fellow's advice and tape up the outside.

I successfully attempted this when having to replace the broken core in my teraminx, that was before I discovered how much fun it was to assemble.

Here's a tip for finding that piece that has fallen on the floor. Try turning off all the lights and using a flashlight. It will help to focus your search on one area at a time and the intense light will reflect off the piece. Works like a charm.

it looks like the tension required to keep the puzzle together exeeds the tolerance of the center part in relation to its thickness...if i had the money to get one id cut 10 bits in the shape of the centers and glue them in .it would stop the flexing which i think is causing them to fracture....that or suggest to mf8 they beef up those parts..it worries me that all the puzzles im seeing are breaking so easily.i think ill wait and get a newer version or see if c4u plan on making one.

After my initial disaster, see above, stickering is complete. Just under 2 hours. Not as bad as I had initially thought. That also included deciding on which colour arrangement.

Next job.

I'm going to remove all the centre caps to check the remaining centre pieces, don't want another unexpected explosion.
In all the fuss with the first explosion, and the stickering process (not a fuss, actually enjoyed it) I appear to have lost the clear mf8 sticker. Mmmmmm.

It figures this puzzle would become available eventually. I feel bad for Reeech right now... It seems the breakage problem could easily be solved by retooling the center mold so that the thickness of the pieces are thicker. All one has to do is remove a thin layer of material from the original molds to thicken the plastic. It seems the centers are getting paper-thin at some times, and this is causing the breakages. For starters, in the packaging department, mf8 could have gotten slightly larger cardboard boxes, and maybe used cardboard with a higher burst-test rating. That and ship it in a retail box with Styrofoam inserts that conform to the shape of the petaminx. I've bought mass-produced art sculptures before which had conforming inserts, and those were a fraction of the price of the petaminx. I believe they were made in China too. The additional packaging cost and styrofoam inserts would be negligible and it should fit easily in a slightly larger square box. That way, if the box is bruised during it's shipment, the styrofoam would conform to the shape of the petaminx, absorbing most of the blow and distributing the force across the entire puzzle surface instead of focusing the force on one spot.

I also got mine a few days ago.
I have not yet had the time to sticker it but it seems to be fine.
Although, it does make a tiny rattling sound when I shake it so I'll be checking the center pieces before stickering.

That means you have similar damage to the others.

Picked up mine at the post office today. The box looked a bit wrinkeled on the outside, but the petaminx was ok. Removed all caps, was lucky to find all center pieces intact :D I loosened the thension a little. Turning four layers simultaneously is still a bit stiff, but I'm reluctant to loosen the tension more.

I'd follow Tony's tips on stickering:
1. The €5 on a curved hobby knife was well spent! I used tweezers earlier, but a knife is far better
2. The elevated table made it much more comfortable (but my right wrist and back did hurt after 1212 stickers......)
I did a face in 9:03, not sure on the total stickering time (was interrupted by a phone call, looking for my daughters wallet, answering texts from my son, ......)

Scrambling took a full Big Bang Theory episode, I'll start solving tomorrow.

Very happy with it! I'll make family pictures and a pretty pattern later. Can you guess my pattern?

It's hard to believe that last week my Teraminx was a "big" puzzle!

The Gigaminx has beautiful, vibrant Cubesmith stickers. The Teraminx unexpectedly came with factory stickers already applied which were "OK" (now starting to chip), but I'm finally motivated to put the set of Cubesmith stickers them on, as I know it will take less than two hours. The Petaminx factory stickers are just under "OK". Some of the colours are wonderful, but I'm disappointed with the Petaminx "purple" and the pointy middle edge stickers make no sense. I sincerely hope that Cubesmith decides to make high-quality sticker sets.

I don't have a problem with the pointy stickers but all the edge stickers seem a little short to me.

I have finished solving my Petaminx today. Yippee! Hooray!

Konrad last Wednesday wrote:

OK, I was a bit faster than I anticipated last Wednesday. Still, tedious is the right word. I had hoped that I would break it in while solving it, but it remained stiff as at the beginning. So, I have to revise my original opinion from last monday a bit. Maybe it would have been better if I had made my last step (see below) as my first step.
Konrad last Monday wrote:
....My Petaminx has arrived today (from hknowstore). It was perfectly packed in a strong cardbox.
The puzzle is in perfect condition and turns excellently. It turns at least as good as my mf8 Teraminx.
So far, I have stickered two faces. The stickers are of high quality (much better than the original mf8 Teraminx stickers). They look very much like Cubesmith stickers.
When I started the real solving, I immediately recognized that "at least as good as the mf8 Teraminx" was not true. I was not adventurous enough to try to loosen the screws and Tony's video was not yet available.
So, I solved it with the original tension and when it was completely done, I thought that I should check my caps.
This was really hard for me and when I got out the first one, I recognized that the screws were as tight as possible.
Fortunately, nothing is broken and now I have loosened the screws a bit. The Petaminx turns much better now. I took Tony's advice seriously and unscrewed the screws a tiny bit only.

So, I think it is a good idea to do my (hardest for me) last step as the first one: Check the centres and check the tension!
I is better too, if the stickers are not yet on. I injured even three centre stickers when I had to apply force and my screw driver made an uncontrolled move. (Fortunately my spare stickers from Calvin arrived already.) Strange enough, plugging the caps back was easier for me than getting them out.

I have to revise my remark about the stickers as well.
Here is my complete colour scheme in Gelatinbrain fashion (I have chosen the photos with the caps off, because I'm so proud that I managed this. I was literally sweating!):
Image
I still believe that the stickers are nice and look much better than the mf8 Teraminx stickers. I would criticize the sharp points of the edge stickers, though. I do not believe that they would still look nice after a complete solve. A tiny drop of superglue helped.
Another issue is that the two yellows are too close together under artificial light. The same is true for the light purple and pink.
In daylight it is better, though.

Thanks to everybody who has contributed to this thread, especially to Tony for his videos. Without them, I would never had dared to remove the caps.
The puzzle felt completely stable at all times. Just when I read all those posts about exploding and broken parts, a certain feeling of danger crept into my heart.
My theory is, that the Petaminx is OK when nothing bad happens during the shipping. I doubt that mf8 will change the mold, so the the obvious measure is MUCH better packaging.

EDIT:

Probably not so many have solved both, so far. (How many are we in this club?)
I would say that you cannot compare the two, regarding the challenge they provide.
The Multi-D is a hard puzzle and requires a high concentration for a long time. The Petaminx is easy in principle and you are never in danger to loose track of setup moves. You can probably watch the Olympic games on TV while solving the Peta. I do not recommend this while solving the Multi-D.

For the record, it will have 151 stickers per face, 1812 total. Not nearly as impressive as Brandon's (bmenrigh) calculation of the number of states, but a while ago I worked out a formula for the number of stickers for an n-layer minx and indulged in some wishful thinking:

When it comes to puzzles most predictions have been hugely under estimated. Lets hope the trend continues.

Please edit your post emediatly!

If you want to discuss the matter of production line, then I personally think its obvious that Mf8 does bring several "interesting" puzzles to the market beside this huge boring chunk (Irony intended).

Following my previous post I have been round all the centre pieces and discovered there were another three cracked or split and ready to fail at some time or other. This makes four in total on my Petaminx. :( Anyone beat this? (See, I've even been forced to use a smiley, things I usually avoid like the plague, or, like a broken Petaminx).
I fixed them all and reinforced them. Some of us can do this but I'm sure there are others that cannot, aside from the fact that you souldn't have to. This is not a cheap puzzle. I know I should have returned it but then would the replacements be any better. Looks like it might be all down to luck. You just live in hope that the centres that appear to be okay now, don't decide to develop a fault and the Petaminx falls to bits in the future when you are using it.
This is obviously a production issue, touched on in past postings from others. If prototypes had been tested thoroughly this should have been resolved/avoided.

Makes you think if you should wait to see what others discover before you place your order for a puzzle. But - if everyone did this there would never be any ordered - who would be the first?

what do mf8 have to say about it.are they sending replazement centers or swapping the whole thing?im not going to get one now until the issue is sorted or at the least explained by them.its just too costly to take the risk when there shouldnt be any..
