The petaminx is no longer listed on mf8's site.

I thought it was always "out of stock", it hasn't actually been released yet.

I got to try a prototype MF8 petaminx a week and a half ago. At the time I wasn't very surprised because I mistakenly thought it had already been mass produced. I guess I was thinking about the teraminx.
For those wondering about the quality: The prototype I tried was the first test sample. It turned fantastically. I don't believe there was a modified second mold made, it wouldn't be necessary. Turning was smooth and even, no catching of the many small pieces.
Great build quality. Impressive work from MF8, as always.

A few days later, I feel a lot better about this being mass-produced. Huh. Weird. chris wrote: I got to try a prototype MF8 petaminx a week and a half ago. At the time I wasn't very surprised because I mistakenly thought it had already been mass produced. I guess I was thinking about the teraminx.

I agree with the DIY idea. I will not buy a fully assembled/stickered version because I do not have the spare $219 nor would I want the puzzle to spend that much anyway. I see no downside for MF8 offering a DIY version and I really hope they do

don't DIY versions usually cost like 1-2$ less than the assembled versions?

Yeah, but that's for 3x3x3s, which have 27 parts. This puzzle has at least 975 (there may be more if they split some parts). If we assume $1.50 is saved for every 27 parts, then 975/27*1.5=54.1666666....
So we should save around $54, although it inevitably would not work out like that.

The minimum wage in China as of March 2012 is about $1.73, and I can't see puzzle assemblers getting much more than this. So the assembly costs of the Petaminx are about $7. How much is 4 hours of your time worth?

While I think it would be a lot of fun to put together a DIY I wouldn't buy one. There are just too many pieces and the chance to have one missing or damaged it just too great.
I once ordered a C4U 3x3x5 DIY (directly from C4U) that was missing a piece. I was able to get the missing piece (I had to order and pay for an extra puzzle because they didn't want to send out just a single piece) but it was a hassle. I would not want to have to go through the process or ordering this puzzle, waiting up to a month to get it, spend an evening assembling it only to discover 1 missing piece, and have to wait up to another month to get that last piece.
