Hi!

Some time ago I made 2 sketches of Gear Corner Turning Octahedron and asked the community what version they'd prefer to be built. Most said that the one with central face elements would be better. So, here it is.

All gears (corners and edges) have the same angular diameter and 8 teeth, but due to their different nature they turn differently. The geared basement under the moving layer has 20 teeth, so after one full turn-around all involved gears flip by 180°. This repeated again, brings the puzzle to the original state.

This design has a deep and secure gears interconnection and never skips gears (at least I could not do this when I intentionally tried).

Oh! From the original sketches, I thought that this design was just a variant shape of the Gear Cube. I'm glad that I was wrong!

Wow, beautiful! This is by far my favourite gear puzzle. I love the super high symmetry and that all the gears are similar size and shape, they remind me of suns. I also love how the shape becomes very confusing as it scrambles, and yet all moves remain possible (I don't like jumbling puzzles). And finally, it turns so well. Truly a perfect puzzle in every respect!

Can you add edge length and weight of this beauty?

Hmm, maybe that could be the basis for a more creative name for the puzzle - "Sun Star" (after the Star Puzzler name for the original CTO) or something.

Of course, it's up to Timur.

I haven't seen the video yet... I'll check it out tonight. But it almost looks like its possible to make a mixup version of this puzzle. If you could turn two opposite corners by 45 degrees it would appear that the corners and the edges had changed places along the slice layer. I'm guessing the puzzle doesn't actually allow this... does it? If it did this puzzle would be very closely related to Oskar's Geared Mixup puzzle yet still not quite the same.

If this doesn't allow for Mixup moves do you think that is a feature you could add in the future?

Absolutely stunning. By far my favourite gear puzzle, and I really hope I can own this soon (whether that will be through Shapeways or mass production ). Great stuff.

Publishing the puzzle in the museum takes some time so why not do it a week earlier? Not sure about the weight, I think it's 100-150g, but the edge length is 60 mm.I don't know, probably! The next thing I'm going to build is a tetrahedron with the same face pattern like here (Gear Halpern-Meier Tetrahedron).
No, it does not allow mixup turns. If you turn the very middle layer (the one with 8 gears) by 45 degrees (so that the edges and corners swap over), the indermediary layers with turn by smaller angle and will block turning aroung all other axes until you finish the turn by turning the middle layer further.
