Well, I managed to pick up a couple of Dioctipoids from RyanA, and I decided to make a black one just for you guys who like that sort of thing. So I took the thing apart, and then I had to remove the raised Dioctipoid name from all of the diamond shaped pieces. Then I dyed the parts using the acetone and Rit dye method:

Now, I am trying to decide on a nice sticker arrangement. Of course, I could just copy the Dioctipoid 2.0, but I thought that I could do better:

Which do you prefer? Or have you any other ideas? I'll post a picture of the finished puzzle when it's ready.
<edit> I forgot to mention that I tried using the acetone based vinyl dye but it did not penetrate the ABS at all and just rubbed off with a fingernail :( </edit>

Wow Gus, really nice! Glad they served their purpose.

You've done a great job on removing the raised lettering. I'm going to be boring and say go for a regular six colour arrangement on the stickers though ;)

This looks great! So "naturally" black!

I used the same method Brandon shared in that thread yesterday and attempted to dye a Tony Fisher egg. Well, I sort of broke the egg. Must have done something wrong. :( I'm thinking to more precisely follow Brandon's method, I'll get a measure cup and tube.

Will give it a second try at some point.

I really think that Moulding Innovations made a black one while I saw this topic! But I'm impressed by your dying! It seems really good! Hope to see when it is stickered. :D

There are clearly variations in ABS. Wikipedia mentions "additives" that can be used to change the properties of ABS to some degree:

Wikipedia wrote:
The final properties will be influenced to some extent by the conditions under which the material is processed to the final product. For example, molding at a high temperature improves the gloss and heat resistance of the product whereas the highest impact resistance and strength are obtained by molding at low temperature. Fibers (usually glass fibers) and additives can be mixed in the resin pellets to make the final product strong and raise the operating range to as high as 80 °C (176 °F). Pigments can also be added, as the raw material original color is translucent ivory to white. The aging characteristics of the polymers are largely influenced by the polybutadiene content, and it is normal to include antioxidants in the composition. Other factors include exposure to ultraviolet radiation, for which additives are also available to protect against.

I mention this because I'm beginning to think that there isn't a one-concentration-fits-all for dyeing. I recently ran out of Acetone and tried to use MEK (a much stronger solvent) to dye three different puzzles. The MEK caused a lot of damage but each of the three puzzles took damage at a different rate and in different ways. In my first video I added acetone little by little until the dye started taking. That might be the right approach.

I have more acetone so I hope to have the time to make another video this weekend.

I used about a 20% concentration of acetone and twice as much Rit as I would use for WSF. Also, I left the pieces for about 2.5 hours, covered over to stop the acetone from evaporating.

(Oh, BTW, don't pour the acetone into the water when it is too hot, as it boils off explosively, scattering dye all over the kitchen (and your trousers) :( )

Six colour Skewb stickers work well.

Ah yes, I forgot about using split stickers on some faces.

I've just received the stickers from Oliver, so ...

I decided to go for the pattern shown in stickers 5 above, and I used the standard megaminx colour scheme. I think it turned out quite well :D

Beautiful.
Hopefully the original producer sees this.

I think this looks much better than the coloured plastic version, but the diamond shaped stickers are a bit awkward to apply. I have emailed dioctipoid.com with a link to this thread. Maybe once he sees my mod, he may produce black plastic versions?

I don't quite get the logic of this pattern. Can you post an "unfolded" pic?

The sticker pattern consists of 6 of Face A and 6 of Face B:
Attachment:
File comment: Dioctipoid Stickers
Dioctipoid_stickers.png
Dioctipoid_stickers.png [ 14.88 KiB | Viewed 1542 times ]
This shows the "top" and "bottom" views (actual colours are different):
Attachment:
File comment: Top and Bottom
Dioctipoid_1.png
Dioctipoid_1.png [ 160.24 KiB | Viewed 1542 times ]
This is the "side" view:
Attachment:
File comment: Side

So the puzzle has three Face A on the "top", three Face A on the "bottom" and six Face B around the "equator".

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

...Are there any other possible "solved" configurations with this setup? By "solved" I mean with all colors grouped into convex shapes. (Or maybe non-convex ones!)
