It's rare because it hasn't been in production since 2005 and even when it was in production, I think it was only sold online. Even if I wanted to spend $600 on one, the auctions for them are so few and far between that I'd still have to get lucky. Since then the community has grown a lot which means the demand has gone up. There is a company that claims they are going to produce them again. If that happens the value will probably drop back down to reasonable levels again.

That's very nice. If you think about it it sounds funny though-all this money for colored plastic balls that aren't produced anymore.  2005 wasn't all that long ago. Hopefully they will go ahead and make this again at reasonable prices.
